The Youth of South Sudan

$1,700 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 23 people in 11 months
Created February 5, 2018
The youth of the South Sudan live as refugees throughout the world. Most fled in the night, with nothing but the clothes on their back, to escape genocide and the devastating wrath of a 50 year civil war. Today, for the first time in history, these youth are being reunited to compete on basketball's world stage. The funds raised will be used to compete in the world championships as well as the African championships and to provide scholarships to the youth of the South Sudan, both young men and young women. Time is of the essence as these brave student athletes are completing their school year and looking forward to a chance to represent their home country in several tournaments throughout the summer. To these youth, your support means not only a once in a lifetime experience, but an opportunity to bring joy and hope to their friends and family so long subjected to the hardships of war. In the words of one athlete, "I hope to give my country something to cheer for, something to believe in and to be an example to those that come after me." Our gratitude is profound. Because of you, we can carry our flag as ambassadors of peace. Because of you, we can show our loved ones at home how proud we are of where we came from. And because of you, we can rejoice in the hope of brighter tomorrow!
- This fundraiser was organized by the team's Head Coach, Scott Catt as well as Assistant Coach Madut Bol. The money will be deposited into an account in the name of the Coach and will be overseen by a team of advisors to ensure transparency and that the money goes entirely to the players.
- The funds will be used to compete in four tournaments through June. The first will be an U18 tournament in Belgium and will cost approximately 15000 dollars to compete in. This includes registration fees, lodging, flights, jerseys and insurance. Another 12,000 will be spent on a 3 on 3 African Championship in Togo, The majorityof that money will be spent on flights with the remainder of the money again going to tournament fees, food and jerseys. The 18U African championships will be in Tanzania in June and that tournament will cost the team approximately 20,000 dollars for travel, equipment, lodging and training time before the tournament, as well as food and insurance. An 18U olympics will also take place just after the African championships and will cost another 20 to 22,000 dollars. This will be spent on registration fees, uniforms for the opening ceremonies, travel expenses, lodging, food for a week, insurance and passports as needed.
