The Challenge : Hike to the summit of 3 of Sligo’s most iconic peaks in one day

Your challenge day begins at the Riverside Hotel, Sligo where sign in and our safety briefing takes place.
All Hikers will depart from the hotel by coach.
Sign in’ from 7am.
Depart hotel at 7.30am
Expected return time to hotel: 6.30pm

Peak 1 : Benbulben
Benbuben is by far the most recognizable mountain in Sligo and perhaps all over Ireland. The coach delivers us to our start point a brief 20 minutes from the hotel. The route to the summit takes us through a tranquil blanket bog valley before climbing to the main plateau of the mountain range and onward to the summit. Views in every direction are simply breathtaking. This peak is expected to take between 3 and 4 hours. Lunch is provided upon our return to the coach pick up point where our team will have freshly made sandwiches and tea/coffee ready to refresh the group before peak 2.

Peak 2 : Knocknarea
Stepped in thousands of years of human history and folklore, Knocknarea see’s more visitors each year than any other Sligo hill. We climb this icon from the south side and arrive on the summit to pay homage to Queen Maeve, reputed to be buried here under the giant cairn that sits atop the mountain. The views over Sligo bay and city are the best in the county and our descent takes us down the stairway with stunning views of Strandhill and the Coolera peninsula. Snack provided at finish and a service station sits beside our collection point in Strandhill where a short 15 minute break will be available to anyone requiring toilet breaks or a shop visit.

Peak 3 : Knocknashee
Nestled away in south Sligo sits Knocknashee, often overshadowed by its elder siblings in the north of
the county Knocknashee holds it own claim to Sligo’s history with the discovery of ancient human settlements that once sat upon it’s summit. In fact the entire top of Knocknashee is surrounded by an accent rampart that at one time enclosed and protected these buildings and tombs. Our route takes us from an old Abbey ruin towards the hill where we climb a moderate but short section toward the rampart and to the flat summit plateau. Upon reaching he summit cairn we will hear the fabulous story of Knocknashee’s past from a local archeologist as we take in the tranquil 360-degree view.
Upon completing your challenge, the coach will return the group to the Riverside Hotel where you are free to use the shower and changing facilities.

The Riverside have a full evening menu should it be needed and offer a 10% discount on
anything purchased on this trip at the Riverside (not including accommodation)

Thank you for taking an interest in supporting our much needed and supportive organisation. By participating you are allowing us to spread awareness and simply acknowledge that siblings grieve too.

Enjoy your climb and looking forward to meeting and seeing you all there on the day.

Train gently and remember this is not a race, this is about getting outside and setting yourself a goal, one step at a time.

With thanks and gentle breath,

Aishleen, Katie-Anne and Charlotte.

Below is a piece about us, Jacintas Smile.

We are a new nationwide and fully registered organisation working alongside Vita House Family Centre in Co. Roscommon.

In short, we are three sisters that have set up this organisation because two of our brothers Fintan and Declan and our sister Jacinta have died. Our three siblings. We created this service because we feel and fully understand the absolute trauma and chaos that ensues when a child dies in the family.

We have chosen to acknowledge the siblings that are left behind. Recognising that they all too often feel empty, angry and deeply saddened.

What we do:

We have three branches. First of all, we create fun outdoor adventure days for young people and young adults that have lost a brother or sister.

We work with children between 7-17 as they are often told that they are resilient and are sometimes forgotten in their heavy grief.

We work with young adults between the age of 18-25 as this is where alcohol, drugs, college pressure or stresses can show up.

The days we provide create a deep and trusting bonding with each of the siblings and mostly reminds them that they are not alone in their heartache.

Since our days out started we have been given feedback on the immense power and positivity our days create within the young children and adults.

Some have made life-long friends, some have begun to open up about their siblings death , some have spoken openly of the difficulties they that face in living with death and some have developed very real and positive coping strategies.

An area that we pride ourselves on is looking after our mental health. This is something that is often spoken of yet many do not know how to do this.

As much as we can we try to create outdoor fundraisers that enable us to push our boundaries in order to achieve a sense of achievement, such as our North West Three Peaks Challenge held in August of last year and this years Sligo Three Peak Challenge.

For us three sisters, our ethos is to breath fresh air and take small steps.

We gently remind our young people of the importance of self-compassion for the trauma and sadness they are suffering.

We also recommend being outside and meeting others in a similar situation to themselves. We do this because it is the simple things that have gotten us through our multiple losses.

The whole reason we continue to work in this organisation is because it is needed and it is with passion and with love that we want to guide the young people that we come to cross so that they feel safe and held.

Our next branch is in offering therapy to each of the young people that attend our adventure day.

We also believe in continued support, tailored specifically to each individual. We provide this through linking in with Gaisce and Foroige where the young person can be thought of and supported by a vetted mentor.

As mentioned above, we are a new organisation, in our infancy, however, we have received incredible feedback and have the honour of working along-side The Irish Hospice Foundation and The Irish Childhood Bereavement Network in shining the light on Childhood Bereavement.

We would very much appreciate if you would consider donating to our very worthy cause.

We are looking forward to getting to know you on the day with trust and with ease,

Warm Wishes,

Aishleen, Katie-Anne and Charlotte
