Sequin Island Going Solar

Tax deductible
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Friends of Seguin Island, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

On April 26, 2019 the Coast Guard deemed the electric cable running from Popham beach to Seguin Island unsafe and power has been turned off to the island.

What does this mean for Friends of Seguin Island Light Station and the thousands that visit every year? First, it means we have to work on an alternative power source. We are researching a generator for 2019 and looking towards solar for 2020. Opening day has been postponed and visitors will not be invited to the island until we can get the electricity problem solved!!!!!

“This is a new chapter for Friends of Seguin Island Light Station” says On Island Committee chair Rick Mayo. “We have been blessed with help from the Coast Guard up to this point but now we are on our own. We are scrambling to raise funds for a temporary generator while we work on a solar plan for 2020.” We estimate the cost of solar to be around $30,000. A temporary generator will be around $5500. None of this money is in our budget!

We are a small non profit organization whose mission is to “distinguish Seguin Isalnd Light Station as part of Maine’s maritime heritage through education and preservation to foster connections with our area history for generations to come”. Seguin is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Approximately 2500 visitors come to the island every year to bask in its beauty, learn some maritime history and climb the tower to view the majestic first order Fresnel lens. Friends of Seguin Island Light Station hires keepers as docents and caretakers of the island for the summer season. Without electricity we will not be able to have keepers living on the island. That means no trail maintenance, no tours, no raising money in the gift shop, no overnight paying guests and, perhaps worst of all, 2500 people will miss out on the opportunity to experience Seguin.

We greatly appreciate any and all help you can give! THANK YOU!
