Solar Lights for Q'eros Kids

$6,600 of $6,000 goal

Raised by 103 people in 12 months
Created January 1, 2018
Help plant Seeds of Sunlight!  Our goal is to provide sustainable, effective and durable solar lamps to families of school children in the remote Andean villages of the Q'eros Nation in Peru.

When we asked Q'eros families, "What is most needed right now?"  The answer came back: "Please help us get solar lights so our children can read and study after sunset."

Many children of Q'eros walk for hours every day to attend school.  Often, it's already getting dark by the time they get home.  With no power source available for lighting it's nearly impossible to read or study.  This can lead to falling behind in school and giving up on an education.

These Q'eros families want their kids to do well in school.  They recognize how quickly their world is changing.  They are aware of the importance of a good education in advocating for their indigenous rights.  They understand the value attending school brings to preserving and honoring their cultural heritage and the environment of the land they steward.

Help us reach the goal to provide solar power to 50 families in the villages of Q'eros!

A donation of $25 provides a Q'ero child with a solar-powered study lamp .
A donation of $50 provides a Q'eros family with solar-powered light plus additional power-charging capacity.
A donation of $100 or more helps provide a 3-lamp solar system to light and power a Q'eros family home.
A donation of $1000 or more can help illuminate an entire Q'ero village.

Each and every donation, no matter how large or small, makes a huge difference in the lives of these families.

In the spirit of Ayni (sacred reciprocity and exchange):
Names of each donor of $10 or more will be included in a special gratitude despacho blessing ceremony held by the Q'ero elders in Peru.
Each donor of $25 or more will receive a photo and thank you card from the children of Q'eros (in addition to the above).
Each donor of $50 or more will receive a small hand-woven bracelet made in Q'eros (in addition to the above).
Each donor of $100 or more will be invited to attend a special post-project blessing celebration and documentary advance screening (in addition to the above).

It's so easy to take for granted the privilege and convenience of light and power.  We only think about it in those rare moments we lose it and find ourselves scrambling to locate candles or flashlights.

Please take the next 90 seconds to empower and illuminate a child's home in Q'eros.

Your generous donation not only provides solar power, it also supports the empowered continuation and growth of the Q'eros Nation.

Kids Helping Kids!
As part of their 8th Grade Service Learning at Paulo Freire Freedom School, Callie Blackwood (14) and Nicola Carrion (14) are helping lead this campaign to organize, promote, and deliver solar power to the communities of Q'eros.

Your support of this project not only benefits the children of Q'eros... it also gives these Tucson kids a hands-on educational and cultural experience to last a lifetime!

We will give updates on the progress and will be documenting the journey.

Seeds of Sunlight Update & Invitation

November 28, 2018

Hello Dear One, during this Season of Gratitude we want to remind you… YOU made a huge difference in the Peruvian Q’eros village of Qollpacochu!

Thanks to your generous contribution and the contributions of more than one hundred other compassionate friends of the Q’eros Nation, we delivered solar lighting and power to every household in Qollpacochu in March of this year. In addition to the 30 home systems we installed, we also provided solar-powered student lamps to families in the villages of Charkapata and Hatun Rumiyok.

One of the leaders and beloved Paqos from Qollpacochu village is coming to Tucson for a surprise visit! Don Juan Apaza Quispe would like to show his gratitude and appreciation for your kindness and support by offering a traditional Q’ero ceremony. It will be held in the Harmony Hut yurt on Monday, December 10th at 7pm (AZ).

Please accept the honor of this invitation and attend in person if you can. If you will be unable to join us in Tucson, we will live-stream the event online here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCviWZlNnRW6SvBvM5hE2izg

We are in discussion with leaders from all 3 villages regarding the next project to offer our support for these families of Q’eros. I will keep you posted on the progress and how we may be able to help!

Thank you.
Urpichay Sonqoy!

Cargo: A Sacred Responsibility

In the indigenous traditions of the Andes, one of the duties of membership in the Ayllu (collective community) is to fulfill and perform a series of "cargos." This term refers to the weight of responsibility that must be carried to be of service to the greater community. While one person may be the "cargayuk" (the one in charge of the cargo) it is generally a load carried by an entire family. The effort and expense are shared by all members of the family for the benefit of the entire community. A "cargo" is a sacred responsibility.

Well, thanks to all of you... our cargo has arrived in Cusco and is ready to be delivered to Q'eros! These boxes contain over 100 solar lights and were entirely funded by this community fundraising campaign.

We will be heading to Peru this Friday and will load the precious cargo onto horses and fulfill this sacred responsibility by personally delivering solar power to the Q'eros families who have requested this support.

Huge gratitude from our family to all of you for helping us carry this load and fulfill this sacred service! We will be posting updates on the journey whenever possible. Urpichay Sonqochay!

THANK YOU!! We have reached our online goal but are still encouraging donations to support this project! Every donation gives more light to Q'eros!

I'll be placing the first order for the solar products this Friday - just after the new moon/solar eclipse in Aquarius. I invite you to take a few minutes during this powerful window of time (Thursday or Friday) to direct your finest Munay (lovingkindness) to bless these seeds of sunlight we are coming together to plant with our Q'eros families.

On the next new moon - in March, just before Equinox - we will be on our way to Q'eros - horses laden with solar lights - spending our first night camping at the foot of Apu Huaman Lipa. (see photo)

Here, with the Paqos, we will make our first ayni haywarikuy (despacho) offering, asking permission to enter the Q'eros land and making introductions for us all. We will phukuy (blow) a kintu (offer blessings) in honor of each contributing donor, creating seques (energetic bonds) between each of you and Apu Huaman Lipa. As a contributor and supporter of this project, you will be forever connected to this ancient, sacred and holy place in the high Andes.

This will be such a strong, powerful connection for each of you! Apu Huaman Lipa is a primary guardian for the Q'eros Nation and a powerful provider of blessings and protection.

Thank you for your participation in this journey of service and Ayni! Your connection to this lineage of Q'eros has deepened and will continue to grow.

I'll update as much as possible along the way. Thanks for going along with us for the ride!

And.. we still have room for more - please share :-)

Urpichay Sonqo,
Celia
