Saving Our Pollinators

Saving our pollinators: one garden at a time!

The Fredericton Botanic Garden Association is designing a garden bed dedicated to saving our pollinators. We will use this garden not only to attract and support pollinators at risk, but also to educate the public about plants and their pollinators. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are all part of our natural landscape, and what people do in their own backyards can make a difference. Our garden will pave the way, but we need your help.

Many of the plants you love wouldn’t be here without pollinators. In the United States alone, over 2.5 billion honey bees pollinate $15 billion crop species every year. Some examples of crops pollinated by both native and honey bees are almonds, watermelon, blueberries, and cranberries. Threats to pollinators include pesticide use and habitat loss. According to Canada’s Species at Risk Act, the yellow-banded bumble bee has been declining in much of southern Canada. Just this year, the rusty patched bumblebee (Bombus affinus) has been put on the Endangered Species list in the United States. It used to be common in the eastern and Midwest states and Canadian provinces. Over the last 30 years, the rusty patched bumble bee has declined by 99% in southern Ontario.  Of course, it’s not just bees: our most familiar butterfly, the monarch, is now listed as endangered.

Gardens and native habitats provide pollinators with habitat and access to nutrition, such as the pollen and nectar they need to thrive. Our garden will include a traditional garden bed with well known plant varieties, as well as a native wildflower patch and bee hotels. We will also use this garden for teaching and educational workshops, so that people can learn things such as what to plant and how to make bee hotels. Let’s save our pollinators together!

About the Fredericton Botanic Garden:

This garden bed reflects the vision of the Fredericton Botanic Garden, which is to welcome all to enjoy and learn about the beauty and diversity of plants, gardening, and nature. The Garden is located adjacent to Odell Park, a major city park in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It's free, and open to all.

Among the Garden’s aims are to:

1) provide recreational opportunities for the public through garden displays of foliage and flowers, walks, interpretive trails, talks and workshops, and other events;

2) provide a contemplative space offering serenity;

3) educate visitors about gardening, plants, nature, and conservation;

4) provide demonstrations of, and advice on, gardening techniques.
