Save Kevin’s College Dream – Give My Son a Chance After His Father’s Suddenly Passing
https://www.tributecremationsociety.com/obituaries/Collen-Jung-Kuo-Cheng?obId=4213149#/obituaryInfo
Kevin was born in Long Island, NY, went to school at Jefferson Houston, VA from kindergarten to 2nd grade. Then transferred to Douglas Macarthur and later graduated from Northwood in NC. He later went to school at West Cary Middle school joining school Orchestra and Cary High school join local Kendo group, NC graduated from both school. Currently he studies in UNCC as Computer Science major 2nd year also heavily involved in Anime Club. He wants to learn about Japanese clay technique so he can create Japanese anime characters as future hobbies and new business goal into gaming world for robotics.
My son Kevin turned 20 this month. It’s supposed to be a special birthday, when young men march swiftly toward adulthood, uncertain of their destiny but hopeful of the future. But it was a bittersweet day.
Our lives came to a crashing halt a few days earlier when his father died suddenly. Our family was already struggling because my husband, out of work, had a tough time to find a suitable job; most of the company VPs he interviewed with were scared he would take over their position. He finally received a call for a business partner that appreciated his talent and wanted to be partner with him to build his enterprise, but it was too late by then. Financial insecurity has taken its toll on our family, now more than ever. Kevin spoke to me the other day about his crushed dreams – first, the devastating loss of his father and now, the burden of mounting college costs.
My son was not a regular kid. He didn’t speak his first word until aged four and was enrolled in special education classes up until seventh grade.
Still, despite all odds, he persevered.
From grade school through high school, he earned countless citizenship awards – for perfect attendance, never being late, helping others, being a good community member, and being a helpful classmate.
Kevin was drawn to music during these early years. As a member of his middle school orchestra, he played violin and visited different schools to play with the band. He also sang Christmas carols with friends on the street during the holidays. His artistic inclination continues today, as he enjoys using clay to make Japanese characters adorning his bedroom.
Despite his creative flair, the truth is Kevin feels at home behind a computer screen. In high school, he was part of the Architecture/Construction/Engineering Group, but switched to computer science because he felt architecture was too demanding and client-facing.
When he was accepted to UNC Charlotte, my husband and I drove four hours every other week to visit him in the college dorm. As a freshman, he felt abandoned and isolated; he only had an opportunity to return home twice a year. But now, in his coming junior year, he is more confident and aims to study robotics, artificial intelligence and gaming. He understands intense competition awaits him, but believes taking additional specialized classes and gaining work experience will give him an edge.
From his early years of special education, to his career ambitions in the cutting-edge ICT sector, I am so proud of my son. He has come so far, but has a long way to go.
I never dreamt I would lose my husband one day and ask strangers for help. But after my husband's passing, I need to think about my son's future. I have always believed that “where there is a will, there is a way.” My son is going back to school in August and I am unsure if financial aid will cover all of his costs. Maybe GoFundMe is my miracle, my son's last HOPE.
Our fundraising goal of $10,000 will pay for tuition, monthly car insurance of $300, $500 for school parking, other college-related fees, and living expenses without Kevin’s father’s support or his mother by his side.
I would like to express gratitude to the Next-door Community; Rebecca has organized for us meal plans via neighbors; Maryann, Rebecca, Andrea, Autumne and another couple kindly brought us food while we were in the midst of our grief in the early days. Others have also offered comfort including our new best friends, Linda and Don, the warmest couple I know for graciously opening their home to Kevin. In addition, Clifford, who would have been my husband’s business partner, has provided my son with guidance and assistance regarding his college and career plans. Special thanks also go to our family friends (Keiko, originally from Japan but living in New York, whom I have known since our school days in Connecticut; and Sonia and her son, Joshua, whom we have known since we moved to Virginia in 2001). Maryann from NJ, and many others we have met over these years. All were unable to be with us, but we know they care so deeply. I also want to thank one of my best friends, Fawzia in Canada, whom we have known since 2006, for her continuing support.
Thank you, everyone, in advance, for reading Kevin’s story and reaching into your heart to give him a chance. His fate is in your hands now. If you are unable to help, please share his dream with others. Greatly appreciate if you can offer him HOPE!
