Eastside Cafe Autonomous Campaign!
This past week we were made aware that there was already a purchase deal in the works for the building.
On Thursday, May4th, at 10am, we confronted that buyer and negotiated a 10-day interruption of a sale. This sale would compromise our occupancy and the wellbeing of our community severely. We have 8 days, Sunday, May 13th, to fundraise $180,000 to get the buyer to back out and began the acquisition process with the donations we’ll be receiving
We the people from Eastside Café, community residents of El Sereno, Artists, Activists, Professors, students, parents, grandparents and so on are here today, to humbly ask you for your financial support to help us purchase the building that sits on the corner of Maycrest and Huntington Dr. in El Sereno, North East Los Angeles. Your contribution will go directly towards the acquisition of the building that will continue to be a thriving space and sanctuary for our rooted communities. The time is now to start buying land for ourselves. Thank you!
As some of us celebrate and enjoy our day off, We want to recognize the beauty and validation of each other's existence, We want to give thanks to our ancestors and our elders, to those who fought and died from violence and oppression, we want to give thanks to our mother earth who gives us everything for our survival, we want to honor the children and next generation who will continue the path of Autonomy and Justice. We want to send love to our indigenous brothers and sisters in Chiapas, Mexico and everywhere on this planet, we are humbled that our Eastside Community take after and look towards the Zapatistas as leaders and also that we are the leaders, the ones we've been waiting for. We do not need to ask permission to be free.
This is our way of decolonizing. WE are taking down racist statues, reclaiming space and land, speaking up for ourselves and for others at schools and at the workplace, we are not afraid to be dreamers and to be migrants, we support taking a knee and refusing to pledge to a flag, We are working towards the abolishment of police and white supremacy, we are decolonizing diet and promoting food justice, creating collectives and uniting that the current government system does not serve us. This is our resistance and self-preservation.
"Todo Para Todos y Nada Para Nosotros"
Please join us for our Celebration Cena this Thursday at 6pm with healthy potluck options. We'll be celebrating the acquirement of the Maycrest building, Caracol Del Sereno, a place for our people https://www.facebook.com/events/295196787632717/?acontext=%7B%22source%22%3A3%2C%22source_newsfeed_story_type%22%3A%22regular%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22newsfeed%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22feed_story%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7D]%22%2C%22has_source%22%3Atrue%7D&source=3&source_newsfeed_story_type=regular&action_history=[%7B%22surface%22%3A%22newsfeed%22%2C%22mechanism%22%3A%22feed_story%22%2C%22extra_data%22%3A%7D]&has_source=1&fref=nf
We are now asking everyone who donated to donate one last time for this specific campaign and hep us in this last push to continue the invaluable work that is contributed from El Sereno residents.
It is not easy to ask for money twice, three times especially to suddenly pitch and convince people of who we are, after not having to rely on on outside funding for years, however we understand that these are the sacrifices it will take Right Now to be able to mobilize "People Power Funding" and to reclaim our space and land.
I can assure you that whatever funds we do recieve this time around, we have already obtained the building and we will be celebrating on our deadline, Thursday, October 12th. 6pm. We're inviting all of our communities to come together to celebrate our Victory, we'll have some community engagement activities and potluck for our Celebration Cena, with our main meal Vegan Pozole, aguas frescas, cupcakes y mas
In the meantime did you hear our interview with KPCC?
Our campaign momentum has created a lot of awareness about the significance of autonomous spaces like the Eastside Cafe not only in El Sereno, Los Angeles, but nationally, and globally. Your donations, participation and advocacy have gone a long way! Thanks to you, our down payment has become lower. The non-profit lenders and local progressive community investors that we are working with also noticed how important this space is.
As of now, our current down payment total is $450,000.
$250,000 of this is targeted to be covered by local progressive community investors, leaving our Gofundme “People Power” Donations New Goal to $200,000 of which we already have $155,403! We have less than $45,000 to raise. We can do it with your support! Thank you to everyone who supported and became more involved along the way."
Please continue to share our gofundme.com/saveeastsidecafe link, to your neighbors, friends, and familias!
In the meantime, We have a great event this Saturday, July 8th called "La Gente Resiste" featuring up and coming indie rock sounds with legendary Xicano Rock band Aztlan Underground
