The Saraswati Development

Our Goal: For Saraswati to be the best that it can be, so its students can reach their full potential!

About Saraswati

Saraswati is located in the south of Nepal, just above the border with India and on the edge of Chitwan National Park. The school has very very little. There is no library, no science room, no colouring pencils, no sport equipment (except one volleyball), no art room and no sick bay.

The two of us, Sam & Hannah, were fortunate to teach at Saraswati Sadan English Boarding School at the end of last year. We agreed that we would try to help the school as much as we could once we had returned back to Australia.

One of the main reasons we want to help Saraswati is
because it is one of the poorest schools in the area, yet it is one of the best.

We learnt from other volunteers experiences at other schools, that Saraswati had  the friendlisest and most welcoming teachers and students. And also compared to the other schools, it has very little coporal punishment.

Saraswati is from pre-school up to year ten (But have they do have plans to expand to year 11 & 12). We were blown away at how bright, happy and enthusiastic the students were. They have no colouring pencils and their workbooks are protected with what plastic they can get from home - definitely no Frozen or Ben10 in sight, but they are the happiest kids you will ever meet.

Both the students and teachers never complain about what little they have. They are hard workers by coming to school six days a week with only having Saturdays off. They have seven periods each day with only a half hour lunch break.

The money we raise will go towards buying resources for the new school they are building. Although can't exactly tell you at the moment what it will buy, as we don't know what amount of money we will get to! But please trust us in that it will be used in a positive way for Saraswati.

We will be working with Hope and Home, an organisation through International Volunteering HQ. (https://www.volunteerhq.org/volunteer-in-nepal) Sanjiv is the Chitwan co-ordinator so he will be helping us work with Shanti & Raj in getting the equipment they need to build their new school.

Why we want to help Shanti

Six days a week Shanti wakes up before dawn to start her busy day running Saraswati. First, she prepares breakfast for her two children, a twelve-year-old & one-year-old, and also for 16 students who board at the school. Shanti then goes downstairs and prepares to teach a maths and science class for her year ten students, which begins at 6AM and finishes at 8AM.

After that class is finished, Shanti takes her one year-old down the road to her parents' in-law for him stay there for the day. She then returns back to school to get ready before all her 125 students arrive for assembly at 9:45.

Throughout the day Shanti moves between classes preparing students for upcoming exams, taking care of business administration duties for the school, organising teachers schedules, sometimes making curry for the boarders when the cook doesn't turn up, and dealing with nagging parents.

After the final bell has sound, Shanti then teaches the year eight students for an extra hour of maths. Once that is finished she then helps her boarders with their homework.

Shanti doesn't get to rest until she lies down to go to sleep at night. But she does not complain at all about her busy schedule. She doesn't even complain about the pain from the surgery she recently had or the gallbladder stones she has to deal with.

Shanti is easily the hardest working person we have ever met and we would like to help her as much as we can!

We would greatly appreciate any donation you are able to contribute. The smallest of donations is still going to make a big difference.

Dhanyabad (Thank you),
Hannah & Sam.
