Blind Woman's iPad Stolen While at Walmart: Campaign to Replace her lifeline to the world.
For those of you who don't know, my dear friend Donna Elliott has suffered a personal theft/tragedy. After bringing her iPad in for an attempted repair at the North Smithfield, RI Walmart, Donna's iPad was stolen.
Donna Elliott, and her husband Joe, are two of the nicest people that you could ever hope to meet. Deeply religious, Donna and Joe have overcome repeated, seemingly insurmountable events during their lives. Each and every time, they wind up stronger, and continue to smile and look for the best in life.
Donna has been legally blind since birth, but with assistive devices, she was able to maintain a fairly active life, including running a small home daycare in the 1980s. As her vision continued to decrease, Donna sought out the assistance of a guide dog, that allowed her new found independence. They faithfully attended Rhode Island College, where Donna earned a degree in Social Work. Donna went on to work in nursing homes, until her own health problems prevented her from working at all.
During this same time, Donna's husband Joe suffered a sudden cardiac death, and was in need of a new heart. Lots of prayers, love and friendships helped to see Joe through the difficult transplantation journey. Even after receiving a new heart, Joe has also continued to have many health problems. Joe and Donna have both been on permenant disability for an extended period of time.
The iPad which she has had for many years, allows Donna to communicate with the outside world, friends and family. It is also one of the only ways that she is able to read, thanks to Apple's applications and programs to assist the blind. Donna is only able to see a little bit of light and dark out of one eye. That remaining eye is also deteriorating, and Donna will be in 100% blackness one day. In the meantime, her iPad has given her a sense of self; independence, the importance of community, friendships, and friends made through her religious and visually impaired groups, as well as others.
Without this iPad, Donna won't even be able to purchase groceries through the Pea Pod Delivery Service. Since both Donna and Joe have been ill for many years, they also have a lot of insurance co-payments, and doctors appointments, and would never be able to afford to buy a new iPad.
Donna is not only a friend to me, but a close "chosen" family member. She also happens to have been the daycare provider that my sisters and I went to from infancy. Although we lost touch for several years, we were lucky enough to get "reconnected" in a very special way.
The reason why I am starting this account, is to raise enough money to get Donna a new iPad, as well as the necessary accessories and programs that she will need. I wish that I could personally donate to this campaign, but unfortunately my circumstances won't allow for that at this time. I do ask however, that if you could please donate even $5, pray over this campaign, share it within groups and on your timeline, or any other positive blessing you can bestow upon it, please do.
It pains me to think that such a loving, kind-hearted and giving woman, is attempting to go on without her lifeline to the outside world.
Thank you all in advance for any monetary, spiritual and blessings gifts, Sending love, light and peace to you all.
Best Regards,
Jessica St. Jean
