We began the tradition of giving Blessing Bags to people in Detroit who are homeless on Christmas Eve, 2013.
Our beloved mom, nana, sister, aunt, and friend, Leslie McClurg, passed away earlier in January, 2013, after a brief battle with cancer. Our hearts were broken. When Christmas came, we knew we needed to do something in her memory that would help others.
At times in her life, Mom had to rely on the kindnesses of others to make ends meet. When she was in a position to pay it forward, pay it forward she did. Many times she did things for others without them knowing it was her. Leslie's generosity meant things like a co-worker finding a$20 bill that meant there was enough gas money to get home from work. She cooked and baked for everyone. Leslie always gave of her time and her resources whenever she could, almost always anonymously and without the need for thanks.
When we drive into Detroit every December24th, we are reminded of three things. First, the amazing generosity of those who donate to make the bags possible. Second, the ridiculously good fortune we have to live in a warm home with food, good health, family and friends. Third, we remember the lessons Leslie taught us throughout her life. Patience. Kindness. Resilience. Understanding. Love no matter what.
The people who receive these bags are thankful beyond measure. Your kindness means more than you'll know. We've seen people cry, pray, and look to the sky in thanks when they've received them. Some people look confused and ask us if the gift is free. Others have cheered my kids on when they seem them giving out the bags. We just drive until we find someone who looks like they need help. Sadly, we always find people.
