Pupil Charity Fundraiser

Over the last month we have been made aware that one of our pupils has been diagnosed with a form of Bone Cancer. The news came as a shock to the pupil, family and school alike. Since the diagnosis, both staff and pupils within the pupil’s year group have been in disbelief and without question: deeply upset.  Acting at speed, Birmingham Children’s Hospital has already commenced Chemotherapy treatment, something that will continue for some time. Like any parent would, the pupil’s mother has had to take time off work to look after and support her child. As we can all appreciate, life is currently tough for that family. If the heartache and emotional torment wasn’t enough for them to deal with then, like any parent has, their financial responsibility and the possibility of unexpected financial hardship/stress due to work absence.

Whilst life doesn’t appear fair and no matter how many times we question why - Why one of our own? We must draw on the strength we have within our school, our 530 pupil strong community and their families to do what we do best and support a family that needs us.

Over the next week or so, many of us will be getting ready to enjoy a 6 week break from school runs and routines. Whereas for that one family; the summer won’t be filled with the planned fun and laughter that only 4 weeks ago they had set in their sights. We can’t help but to think about the summer our pupil will endure and the burden that family will be feeling. It is for this reason, as a school we have decided to help raise funds for the family.

As a parent myself, I really don’t think that whilst the parents’ hearts are breaking seeing their child experience such an unfair, cruel illness, they should be left to worry about money – paying the bills etc.  And whilst I appreciate whatever is raised, through our very own generosity will be a drop in the ocean, it will still help and remind the family that those around care and wish them well.
