Awareness of the health risks associated with being a fire fighter continue to expand and as a result so do the efforts to mitigate or reduce such risks. One particular health risk that continues to increase, especially with the increased use of synthetic materials in construction, is the increased risk of skin cancers such as Melanoma among firefighters. It is believed that one of the main reasons skin cancer is on the increase with firefighters is that carcinogens from the fire are often trapped within personal protective equipment, such as face hoods, and remain in contact with skin for extended periods of time.
In an effort to help reduce the risk of skin cancer, many departments are taking precautionary measures such as requiring fire firefighters to clean their face during rehab at calls and/or the implementation of red hoods to indicate when an individual is using their spare. These red spare hoods are particularly useful in making Officers and Fire Chiefs aware when personnel do not have a clean spare hood available.
In an effort to reduce the risk with our volunteer firefighters in the Town of Sheboygan Falls, we are looking to raise money in order to purchase a full spare set of red hoods and supplies for our department. For those looking to supprot our effort to protect our volunteers, we hope that you can help make a donation regardless of the amount and/or share our effort to help raise the required funds to improve the safety and well being of our volunteers.
