Buddhist Project Sunshine

$21,007 of $64,272 goal

Raised by 265 people in 6 months
Buddhist Project Sunshine (BPS) is a grass-roots Buddhist community healing initiative driven by a single goal: to renew the integrity of Buddhism in the contemporary world. This project arose from inspiration from Yeshe Tsogyal, a great female Buddhist teacher in 8th C. Tibet. Our work is informed by both traditional Buddhist dharma and Western psychological understandings of trauma and trauma healing. We strive to foster emotionally safe, respectful and honouring environments where people can practice dharma wholeheartedly and build fulfilling lives rooted in compassionate ethics.

Some of our most important contributions:

> Buddhist Project Sunshine Phase 1 Report (February 15, 2018) – This is the groundbreaking report that caused Shambhala Leadership to publicly admit the widespread sexualized violence in the Shambhala community

> Buddhist Project Sunshine Phase 2 Report (June 28, 2018) – This is  report led to the Kalapa Council resigning en masse and the Sakyong stepped down from all duties pending an investigation into his alleged sexual assaults.

> Buddhist Project Sunshine Phase 3 Report (August 23, 2018) – This report detailed more serious allegations against the Sakyong as well as an examination of what a sexual predator is.

> The Buddhist Project Sunshine Discussion Group – We are pleased to offer this moderated discussion space to explore an inspiring and honouring new approach to sangha that dismantles past abusive practices and behaviours.

BPS is receiving acclaim for the quick, organized and effective way that Mipham was exposed in two months. For example, Tenzin Peljor, an activist Tibetan Buddhist monk wrote to us saying, " You do such an excellent and good job, such a hard work! Its the most professional grass root movement in Buddhist context as far as I can see. IMO, you set a very very good example and you have my fullest support!"

Help us build a future

BPS wishes to continue to be attuned and responsive to what is needed as we move forward in terms of assessing the integrity of Shambhala International's 3rd party investigation, care for the nine SMR woman abuse survivors who have contributed to our investigation, and the community's needs for emotionally safe space for grief , trauma recovery, and ultimately envisioning a new, better-suited governance structure.

Longer term, BPS wishes to provide leadership and collaborate with other forward thinkers on how to re-envision Buddhism in the West so that it deals with various forms of inter-generational trauma and social oppressions. We believe that trauma and social oppressions are fertile areas to bring healing and peace through authentic Buddhist ethics and practice, and this will lead to a much more vibrant establishment of Buddhism in the West.

To move forward in a secure and effective way, BPS requires three paid positions: Executive Director, Associate Director, and Development Officer. We are seeking $47,00 in additional funding for three months of interim funding while we set up umbrella charitable status and continue serving the Shambhala community and Tibetan Buddhism in the West.

Here is a link to our budget: Buddhist Project Sunshine 3-month Budget

We now ask for your support to build a sustainable model for our work so we can provide valuable light to Tibetan Buddhism in the West. Please help us to raise an additional $47,000 CA to operate Buddhist Project Sunshine in integrity for the next three months, allowing us time to establish non-profit status.

Thank you for your support!

Dear amazing supporters, thanks to you, Buddhist Project Sunshine is going to continue to do noble work - to create a world that you will be proud for our children to grow up in. We will be releasing a substantial investigation update later in August, and we are looking at extending the highly successful BPS moderated discussion group for another 2 months. I have looked at a budget to carry us through another three months (Aug-Sep-Oct), and have adjusted our fundraising goal to take us through October. Please help us by sharing our fundraiser through social media. Let's keep going!

Everything is percolating along well at Buddhist Project Sunshine Headquarters. This is a big week:

(1) We open registration for the highly anticipated Buddhist Project Sunshine Social Media Discussion Group, and

(2) We are pleased to present the Phase 2 budget. See Richard Edelman's Budget Letter at: http://www.andreamwinn.com/project_sunshine/BPS_Phase2_Budget_Letter.pdf

Please note that we must raise $2,833 more to fund the Discussion Group through July 31st. We’d love your contribution to ensure this programming can happen! Any amount is welcome, even $5 gets us closer to our goal.

If you would like an invitation to participate in the Social Media Discussion Group, sign up for our email list at: http://andreamwinn.com/offerings/project_sunshine_2/

Thank you so much for your support of this exciting initiative!

Dear valued Project Sunshine Supporters,

Someone emailed me today asking about my silence, so I’m sending out a brief update today.

I moved to my permanent Halifax home on May 1st. The process of moving and settling took more effort than I expected. I am now officially settled as of today.

In addition, the past two weeks:

* I have continued meeting with abuse survivors
* I have been meeting with the people forming around me as a wisdom circle
* We have been preparing a new Project Sunshine Phase 2 budget to fund a scaled down version of the original plan in alignment with the smaller amount of funds raised
* I have begun planning the Shambhala abuse discussion forum
* I have begun recruiting suitable discussion facilitators

Many are wondering about the Shambhala “mediation”. There is not much to report at this time. It is not a mediation, and we are still clarifying what their objectives are in hiring a negotiator. Just after approaching me about “mediation”, David Brown posted an outright lie in the Shambhala members forum about my cutting off communication with the Kalapa Council (the opposite is true, as the Kalapa Council cut off communication with me). Although David emailed me confirming the truth of this situation, to my knowledge he has refused to retract his statement in the members forum. This has done little to show me that they are extending in good faith.

I will provide a more comprehensive Project Sunshine update next week, and I am very much looking forward to charting an inspiring next step forward with all of you.

Thank you for your good heart, for your support of Project Sunshine, and for your attention to re-establishing the integrity of Shambhala and Buddhism in the West.

Most warmly,
Andrea
