Buddhist Project Sunshine

$14,421 of $8,846 goal

Buddhist Project Sunshine is a grass-roots Buddhist community healing initiative. In Phase 1 we brought the issue of sexual clergy misconduct into the light in the Shambhala community. In Phase 2 we are expanding our mission to serve all Buddhist communities impacted by clergy sexual misconduct.

Buddhist Project Sunshine Phase 2 has taken on a number of initiatives:

-> A significant preliminary investigation of clergy sexual misconduct has been completed by a veteran professional

-> The project has garnered significant media exposure

-> A website is under development

-> Research has begun developing genuine wisdom for understanding and responding to the challenge of abuse within Buddhist communities

-> Steps are on-going to address the challenge on an individual, sangha, and global basis

-> A Social Media Discussion Group will be offered in June and July 2018 (see below)

A Social Media Discussion Group offered in June and July 2018

We are pleased to offer this space to explore an inspiring and honouring new approach to sangha that dismantles past abusive practices and behaviours. It is a place where participants can discuss experiences, thoughts, questions and insights about sexual violence, social violence, and other harmful behaviours in Buddhist sanghas. The discussion is supported by skilled and caring discussion facilitators.

Everything is percolating along well at Buddhist Project Sunshine Headquarters. This is a big week:

(1) We open registration for the highly anticipated Buddhist Project Sunshine Social Media Discussion Group, and

(2) We are pleased to present the Phase 2 budget. See Richard Edelman's Budget Letter at: http://www.andreamwinn.com/project_sunshine/BPS_Phase2_Budget_Letter.pdf

Please note that we must raise $2,833 more to fund the Discussion Group through July 31st. We’d love your contribution to ensure this programming can happen! Any amount is welcome, even $5 gets us closer to our goal.

Dear valued Project Sunshine Supporters,

Someone emailed me today asking about my silence, so I’m sending out a brief update today.

I moved to my permanent Halifax home on May 1st. The process of moving and settling took more effort than I expected. I am now officially settled as of today.

In addition, the past two weeks:

* I have continued meeting with abuse survivors
* I have been meeting with the people forming around me as a wisdom circle
* We have been preparing a new Project Sunshine Phase 2 budget to fund a scaled down version of the original plan in alignment with the smaller amount of funds raised
* I have begun planning the Shambhala abuse discussion forum
* I have begun recruiting suitable discussion facilitators

Many are wondering about the Shambhala “mediation”. There is not much to report at this time. It is not a mediation, and we are still clarifying what their objectives are in hiring a negotiator. Just after approaching me about “mediation”, David Brown posted an outright lie in the Shambhala members forum about my cutting off communication with the Kalapa Council (the opposite is true, as the Kalapa Council cut off communication with me). Although David emailed me confirming the truth of this situation, to my knowledge he has refused to retract his statement in the members forum. This has done little to show me that they are extending in good faith.

I will provide a more comprehensive Project Sunshine update next week, and I am very much looking forward to charting an inspiring next step forward with all of you.

Thank you for your good heart, for your support of Project Sunshine, and for your attention to re-establishing the integrity of Shambhala and Buddhism in the West.

Most warmly,

We are heading into the last 3 days of the campaign, as it closes on Monday. This is a time to bring focus and clarity to achieving the success needed at this time for this work to move forward.

Thank you to everyone who has donated in the past few days, and a special thanks to Lorre Fleming for leaving the message yesterday, “Thank you for taking on this important work.”

It’s clear we are not going to meet the fundraising goal, so I’d like to share the guidance I am receiving from the elders, the Circle of Wisdom, that is forming around me for leading Project Sunshine.

They are concerned about how I have been hyper extending myself through this much volunteer work in service of Project Sunshine, and they want to see me receive basic support for housing and food.

One elder in the circle said, “We are setting the ground work for this [Project Sunshine] and doing it in a conservative way. This serves the healing more than continuing the healing in an unsustainable way - it serves the mission more.”

In our exploration of how best to use the funds raised, we are settling on a blended approach of using the money over the next three months in the following three areas:

1. Operating expenses for Project Sunshine

2. A stipend for myself to continue leading/coordinating the project

3. Doing one piece of the original plan for Phase 2: I will write a guide for social media conversation moderators, find qualified volunteer moderators, train the moderators, and set up a moderated Project Sunshine social media conversation space so people interested in healing sexual violence in buddhist communities can connect and engage this healing work.

I hope all of the contributors to Project Sunshine will feel good about this use of funds. I welcome hearing from you about this!

We are hoping to raise $3,000 more by the end of the project to ensure Project Sunshine can move forward in a sustainable way for the next 3 months.

Please talk with your dharma sisters and brothers and share widely on social media so we can raise these final funds.

With heart thanks,
