The People’s Climate Movement on April 29th in Washington D.C. and across the country is uniting communities around solving the climate crisis. In Los Angeles, we’ll march in Wilmington (LA Harbor) to call attention to an urgent regional issue – the expansion of the Tesoro Oil Refinery – that has global climate change impacts.

Please contribute to help fund the march towards art, buses, porta potties, a stage and audio equipment, flyers and promotion, and more!

The Peoples' Climate March will unite the front line peoples of Wilmington, Carson, and East Long Beach with their allies in all of Southern California and beyond to stop the merger of large oil refinies. Tesoro wants to substantially expand refining capacity and also build an unprecedented 3.4 million barrels of additional storage tanks, almost doubling storage and accommodating the switch to dirty crude oils, like tar snads from Canada and fracked shale oil from North Dakota.  If Tesoro succeeds in creating the largest oil and gas refinery hub in the West Coast, that will mean increased pollution and explosion risks from the refinery itself, as well as risks from the shipping of this dirty crude taken from ocean tankers, pipelines, and oil trains from all over North America

This merger is an act of environmental racism, where a few communities must bear the burden of contamination, while oil companies profit.  Our march will bring greater awareness of this merger and its significant impact on residents and workers in the facility.  Funds for this march will go into paying for buses to bring people from all over the greater LA area to Wilmington.  It's vital for people all over LA both to see first hand the impact of Tesoro on Wilmington and to meet in solidarity.  Funds will also pay for art work, such as signs and posters, and for stage and sound equipment at Banning Park, as well as other needs to make the event run smoothly..

We want our allies to show up after the march and continue to learn, understand, and help lift up the solutions residents have been fighting for. We want our allies to get involved with the frontline organizations and community here today. Get connected in Wilmington with Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) and Coalition for a Safer Environment (CFASE). Get connected with East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice in West Long Beach.

All of our children’s future demands that we transition away from dirty fossil fuels into clean sustainable energy including Zero Carbon transportation such as electric vehicles. With equity at the center of decision-making, we can create a "Just Transition" for workers and community, to lead and build our clean energy future for green jobs and much healthier communities.

From all of the organizations working together to put on this march, thank you!
