Our brave, amazing Pauly needs your help!

A hard road
As many of you know, Pauly was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 12.  He then persevered through and beat cancer as a young man.  The treatment required to save his life was very aggressive, however, and unfortunately took a toll on his lungs.

Over the past two years Pauly started experiencing increased difficulty in breathing.  He found it harder to enjoy the things he loves best- fly-fishing, backpacking, disc golf, and even creating art.  All these activities have been slowly waning from his life.  The doctors think something must have attacked his already weakened lungs, and on March 21st his lung collapsed.

He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and has remained in ICU since that day.  Strength of will kept him alive, but was not enough to reverse the internal tissue scarring that enveloped and weakened both his lungs beyond repair.  Over time he required increased pulmonary and circulatory life support.

Gifts from heaven
On May 31st he was officially listed as a candidate for a double lung transplant.  Due to his critical condition, less than a week went by before he had a lifesaving match.  An 11-hour operating room transplant procedure was done.

Young Mr. Larkin successfully completed double-lung replacement surgery in early June.  The doctors, nurses and staff at UCSF have been wonderful and tireless in bringing about a positive end to an incredibly complex, painful and resource-intensive procedure.  Pauly’s road to recovery, however, is only just beginning.

Catching his breath
Though the transplant has presented Pauly with unprecedented hope for the future, his chances for a quality life depend on care at present.  Health insurance has covered much of the cost, but many out-of-pocket expenses remain.  We know how many people love Pauly and his family.  We feel being honest and open with everyone is the best way to see this story through to an amazing next chapter.

Only through the support of family and friends will Pauly have the greatest odds of achieving significant and lasting health.  A surgery of this significance truly requires as much support as our humble community can muster!  This is the reason for our campaign.  We all want Pauly to live his best life, his strongest life, as soon as he can.

Any donation, no matter how small, would mean so much to our young man and his family.

Even if you are unable to donate at this time, we ask that you share this campaign (you can copy and paste this link: https://www.gofundme.com/paulylarkin) with your friends and community, through Facebook or email, it really does help tremendously!

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love, prayers and support for our Pauly.

Yay! We have exceeded the 75% mark, $38,500 donated and only $11,500 left to go! Thank you to everyone for sharing and donating in the past few weeks. Please continue to do so as we are almost to our goal!

Update on Paul: He is getting more and more active everyday, walking between one and three miles per day around San Francisco. The Panhandle, the fly-fishing casting ponds in Golden Gate Park, and Cole Valley are some of his favorite areas to explore. A couple of days ago we walked to Kezar Stadium, where the 49ers used to play in the 50's, and Paul walked 3 laps around the track! Things are getting better all the time but there is still a long way to go. We will continue living in San Francisco for the three to four weeks and then our family will be returning home where Paul will continue his rehab.

Thank you all for the support!

Good morning! Good news! Paul was discharged from the hospital yesterday and the next phase of his recovery has now begun. For the next 6 weeks, Paul will be living within a half a mile of UCSF while he attends clinic, goes in for blood draws, and is monitored closely by the UCSF advanced lung team. He is in great spirits and is making progress daily.

Your support is appreciated as our family continues to incur costs associated with Paul's ambulance transports, surgery bills, prescription medication costs, lab fees, and other co-pays. These costs continue to come in and are much higher than we previously anticipated. Please continue to share Paul's story with your family and friends and thank you for your support!

We have exceeded the half-way mark! Over 50% of our goal of $50,000 has been met in 4 days! We still have a ways to go but this progress is awesome! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and shared Paul's story. Please continue to share this page with friends and family as there are still people that we need to reach.

Update on Paul: He has been making awesome progress in the ICU, so much so that he may be moving to a regular hospital room in the next day or two! He is out of bed for almost the entire day and walks two to three times per day, with multiple laps around the ICU each time. This is only 8 days after his transplant!

Quick Note: Paul is not taking visitors outside of family and a couple close friends. Due to immune system concerns, this will probably be the case for a while, sorry to say. Paul is, however, very motivated and has a positive attitude regarding his recovery!

Please continue to share! Thank you all so much!
