Ukraine's Forgotten children

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

My name is Rodelay Medina and I am an elementary school teacher and a native of Cuba. Decades ago, at a relatively young age, I witnessed first-hand the devastating effects that the nuclear accident at Chernobyl had on Ukrainian children. Many of the children affected by the radiation were transferred to Cuba and housed in a popular amusement park, Tarara, which was converted into a housing facility for them by the Cuban government. I do not believe that we are ever properly prepared, no matter what age we might be, to be exposed to certain shocking and disturbing events. I was very young when I was exposed to the images of these radiation ravaged children and they still haunt me to this very day!

It is not surprising that when I recently watched the BBC documentary, “Ukraine’s Forgotten Children”, I, among many others, was extremely affected and appalled by their suffering.  I feel it is my obligation to raise awareness and develop a plan to bring relief and hope to the poor, underserved children suffering in Ukraine. For some time now, Ukraine has been plagued by a terrible war and children have counted among the largest group of innocent victims. These children suffer from many disabilities and maladies, such as cancer, brain tumors, HIV related illnesses, amputated body parts and several other horrendous and terminal diseases. Many have been abandoned by their families, and are haphazardly placed in debilitating and harmful large-scale government institutions, which do not conform to the basic human rights standards, left there alone to die.

These malnourished and abandoned children lack most of their basic needs, which we take for granted, and are now in dire straits. The purpose of this site is to raise funds to help these orphans in need. I urge every single one of you to watch the attached video before making a decision on how much you would like to donate to this humanitarian cause. You can make a lasting change in these children’s lives by assisting us to provide food, clothing and medicine to help alleviate the suffering of these innocent victims. This will only be possible through your generous support. Any amount you can give will be highly appreciated by us and the kids who will be directly benefiting from your generosity. Every penny of your entire contribution will be used only to help and provide services to these children in need and I will cover all of my own personal expenses while visiting Ukraine.

My team and I have selected six institutions that are in desperate need of help. As you know, Ukraine is a very large country, so you might wonder how we chose these six specific institutions. A good friend of mine, who is Ukrainian, was able to put together a list of the poorest Orphanages in Ukraine. My intention was to evaluate each institution’s needs and select the ones that needed our help the most. I soon realized that such a decision was not an easy one. After contacting each one of them and realizing their state of immediate need of resources, choosing just one of the institutions was not ethically sound.  Therefore we decided to share the funds percentagewise among the six Orphanages.

 * A list of all the institutions is listed below for additional information.

Upon my return from Ukraine, I will be providing detailed information and pictures in regards to our efforts in reaching out and providing assistance to the orphans.

This cause is very dear to me not only because I have many friends and loved ones from Ukraine, but mostly because I have the privilege to teach young, smart, healthy children, and I derive a great satisfaction from seeing them excel. I would love to see every child in the world, regardless of nationality or conditions, have the same opportunities in life as we have in this Country. I well know that much work is ahead of us, but at least I hope that I will be able to share some of this happiness with the less fortunate children of Ukraine. Perhaps our efforts will at least bring a smile to a child’s face and help to put hope in their heart.
