25 Years, and a Day

Born and bred in Edinburgh, my family moved to the west of Ireland where I attended secondary school. Within months of finishing school I was in the mountains of the stunningly beautiful island of Corsica with the mountain company of the French Foreign Legion`s parachute regiment, and renewed my initial five year contract there for a further two years upon acceptance into its special forces.  On the 22nd of April 1993, the year after moving on from the Legion, I lapsed into a coma hours after the completion of commercial diver training in Fort William, Scotland.  I had become severely disabled with brain damage as a result of an encounter with a rare form of meningitis - Listeria Monocytogenes Meningoencephalitis.  On awakening from the coma I knew that I was in a hospital bed.  No surprises there ... the dreams had told me so; but the confusion, the double vision, the total inability to communicate, all on top of the incapacitating paralysis ... that was a surprise!  And then the cold.  That ice blue, blinding white cold, permeating every last cell – from the deep visceral to the far flung edges of the extremities.  But there was no awareness of those extremities!  How could that be ?  How could it be known that the legs were akin to the frozen paving stones of a bleak mid-winter dawn; while simultaneously the brain did not want to acknowledge the existence of those very same legs ?  With that confusion came a heightened ‘state of alert’, or should I say, a ‘state of terror’.  After all, ‘they’, the guys & girls dressed in white, had been trying their best to eradicate me for weeks now.  But with the realisation that it was all just a dream and that ‘they’ were in fact doing their utmost to help me, I was engulfed by a wave of gratitude and relief.  Life became so good then, so so good; I was alive, I was alive, I was alive!  The thought ‘what had I done to find myself in this situation ?’ seemed so irrelevant; I just accepted responsibility, and planned to be back on my feet six weeks hence.

Since then I’ve been working hard at turning my brain and body back to the way they once were, and in the last few weeks have been receiving daily sessions of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy delivered by the state of the art OxyGeneration clinic that opened in Galway on the 23rd of April 2018.  HBOT dramatically enhances the self-healing process by delivering pressurised oxygen to the body, and in so doing forces it to dissolve up to 700% more oxygen than the norm.  Body tissues not reached before become completely saturated with oxygen.  The scientifically proven anti-inflammatory process of HBOT at OxyGeneration seems to be working away at reducing the inflammation in my brain and body, and the results so far have been excellent!  After the very first treatment there was increased flexibility, I slept really well that night, and awoke feeling energised the following morning; after the sixth treatment the tremor in my right arm reduced to such an extent that I am able to drink a glass of water using my right hand without any spillage; and after twenty five sessions my emotional well being, speech, vision, mental focus, gait, balance, manual dexterity, and co-ordination have all improved.  Aches and pains from old injuries are fading away.  I feel and look younger, stronger, and faster.  Quality of life is increasing !

To gain the full benefit of HBOT there is a need, in my case, to consolidate those sessions already completed into a total of at least one hundred and twenty sessions.  But I am budgeting for the long term as I imagine a scenario whereby I may need to ‘top up’ with further HBOT sessions in the future.  The price of each session is €120.  Many would consider this an expense; but I view this as an investment ... an investment in physical well being that you simply cannot put a price on.

Thank you for reading my GoFundMe page!
Liam
