Owen Family Tribute

On Monday, April 23, our dear friends Scott and Jennifer Owen, along with six of their seven wonderful children, were in a horrible car accident on the way home from a weekend camping trip.  Scott — a kind, gentle devoted husband and father — died early Tuesday morning. Jennifer — the most incredible, faithful, loving wife and mother — succumbed to her injuries and was reunited in Heaven with her beloved early Thursday morning.

Their daughter Michaela (15) remains in critical condition at a Dallas hospital.  Their son Dalton (10) also remains in critical condition in the room next to his big sister.

Mitchell (13), Alysa (11), Samantha (7) and Liam (5) miraculously survived the crash with broken bones, concussions, cuts and bruises. They are being cared for by all of us who adored their parents.

Ethan (23), the eldest son, was not in the car but now carries the burden of hourly decisions that must be made regarding his two critically injured siblings and the other surviving four. He is handling all of these breathtaking tasks with maturity and grace.

Jen was precious to me, and I miss her desperately. It is my heartbreaking privilege to set up this tribute in honor of our dear friends. These funds will be used for burial costs and for children's immediate needs.

What is left will be rolled into a long-term trust that is currently being established for the Owen children. It will be managed by a third-party.

Jen and Scott loved the Lord with all their hearts. They served others even while they themselves were in need. Jen took care of her father and grandmother, all while homeschooling her children and loving her friends deeply.

This is the least we can do to honor their legacy, and to serve their family back.

In my last update, I forgot to share about how HEB donated grocery gift cards through their wonderful Public Affairs Director, Mabrie Jackson.

Mabrie has spent time with me in person, online, and on the phone, providing wonderful resource information and encouragement. So thankful for her friendship!

Then there was the Plano firefighter who makes furniture for people in need when he is not putting out fires and saving lives. Laddin made and stained the most beautiful oak breakfast table that I have ever seen! And it seats 10 people comfortably!

Laddin and his family delivered it last month right to the kitchen and then tucked a very loving cash gift into Granny Lois's hand.

I continue to be humbled by the kindness and generosity of strangers who have become very special friends.

And to those who continue to give to our GFM, you are a blessing and we thank you.

Dear friends and prayer warriors:

It's hard to believe that just 13 weeks ago, Jennifer and Scott Owen went to Heaven, leaving behind 7 precious children.

Since my last update, God has continued to answer every prayer, according to His timing and His plan for all involved.

The first big news involves the van that we were prayerfully seeking. John and Lois had seen a Ford Transit and loved it, though it was clearly beyond our budget.

But, God!

I went to several dealerships one day, hoping and expecting for the right people to want to help. And it happened at 4:00pm at the very last dealership of the day! I was tired and feeling a bit defeated, and I really wanted to just go home, but I felt the Lord pushing me to tell my story one more time.

Shawne Moore, Employee Relations Manager, for Sam Pack's Five Star Ford in Plano, agreed to meet with me. The rest is a beautiful testimony of God's people showing mercy to their unknown neighbor.

Not only did they search and find a gently used 2017 Ford Transit in another town, but they brought it to Plano for John and Lois to see and drive.

Then they met us at our budget, enabled by the generous people of the First Baptist Church of Plano, making absolutely nothing on the deal! In fact, they even absorbed many fees and sponsored the installation of window tinting, Bluetooth, back up sensors, fog lights and more.

They also offered free roadside assistance and an extended warranty. As if that were not enough, they presented John and Lois with beautiful, engraved key chains! (See pictures below)

We are Ford people now. Sam Pack Ford people!

A life celebration service in honor of Jennifer and Scott was held at First Baptist Church of Plano on July 6th. The two children who had previously been in the hospital after the accident were in attendance, which was incredibly special. It was a sweet tribute to this dear couple and their children.

Jennifer and Scott were laid to rest the following morning, July 7th, at the Hughes Family Tribute Center. The kindness and care provided by the Hughes family through this heartbreaking process has touched us all. We are eternally thankful for their ministry to those who are dealing with great loss.

We are currently submitting applications to a wonderful Christian Academy in hopes that it will be a good fit for everyone. This school wants very much to help these children as they heal and move forward to face a hope-filled future.

Your donations are making it all possible for them.

One more amazing update: We are days away from an exciting announcement regarding the renovation of Granny and PaPa's home to provide a bedroom for the boys, a new garage after existing one becomes boy space, a play area, and bigger laundry room.

Currently, five kids share one bedroom and six kids share one bathroom. That's about to change!

We are working out details with First Baptist Church of Plano and some incredibly generous men on the radio.

More details to come. Stay tuned!

We cannot begin to express our gratitude for all of the acts of kindness each day. I read and save all of your notes for the children to see someday. Every gift is a generous blessing, and every prayer is a source of strength on this journey.

May God bless you all as you continue to bless this family. And to God be the glory!

With love and gratitude,

Holly Jarrett and the Owen family

Dear kind and generous friends,

Michaela and Dalton are home with their brothers and sisters! They both look wonderful and are adjusting to their new lives with Granny and Papa John. There is still healing to be had, but they are coming along well.

A group of talented men from First Baptist Plano are working on a plan to convert the garage space at Granny's house into the boys' quarters, and then a new garage will be built in front of that space. As it is now, 5 kids are in one room while one has his own. The new space will be a huge blessing.

Inside Edition produced a great piece about the Owen tragedy and the love expressed by our DFW community, as well as dear people from all over the country. The piece aired on June 13th. (See INSIDEEDITION.COM)

I have appointed the children's great aunt Linda to be my co-trustee for the Owen Children's Trust. I'm excited to work with Linda as we prayerfully plan a hope-filled future for these kids. Linda is a retired public school teacher and principal who is devoted to her faith and her family. We are already a good team.

Abby and I took Michaela out for a special day of lunch and shopping on Tuesday. She lost most of her clothes in the wreck and has been wearing whatever donated clothing will fit. She was very thankful to get to pick some pretty new things that are all her own. We had the wheelchair in the back of my Suburban but never had to use it once, cuz she's amazing like that! We laughed hard, ate too much, hugged often and gave thanks for the miracle that is Michaela Owen's life.

I am currently working on school plans for the fall. Each child has their own talents and their own challenges, so each must be dealt with according to their individual needs.

We are also still in need of the right van -- a 10 to 12 person van with cargo space for a wheelchair, and lots of windows as Lois worries about blind spots. It's not in the budget, but we know God will provide.

Jennifer and Scott will be laid to rest in July. Please pray for all 7 kids as they continue to grieve and heal.
God bless you all for your compassion.

Much love and appreciation,
Holly Jarrett for the Owen kids

Hello friends and wonderful supporters of the Owen family!
There are so many good reports to share with you all.
First of all, the Lord has begun some incredible healing
with Dalton and Michaela. In the last two weeks, Dalton started rehab at the new hospital where he and Michaela were moved after they both "woke up," and demonstrated the ability to hear, understand commands, and communicate.
What has happened since that time is nothing short of an ongoing miracle:
Dalton is walking, shooting Nerf guns at homemade targets, and progressing well with his therapies.
Michaela stunned us all after two weeks of tracking people with her eyes and some limited communication, she suddenly emerged as OUR Michaela when she began singing along to a Hamilton soundtrack with friends at her bedside. By the next afternoon, her personality was shining through and she recognized all of us. To the delight of her 13 year old brother, she specifically requested his presence in her hospital room and they were reunited.
Though Dalton and Michaela continue to show remarkable improvements, the road to recovery will be long, but God is so very good and faithful to these kids, every step of the way.
The other kids are being loved on and cared for by their wonderful Granny Lois and Papa John, as well as those of us who are close to the family, and their church and American Heritage Girl communities.
Lois and I have been working with an attorney to get the guardianship process completed. Lois will become their legal parent very shortly, which was the wish of Jennifer and Scott, in the case of their absence.
Lois and John have been an active and loving part of these kids' lives for many years, so the transition into Granny's home has been relatively easy.
Another exciting development came when a wonderful family, who owns a furniture distribution company, reached out to me through a homeschool fb page. They have since provided all new, beautiful bedroom furniture for the children. Such a blessing!
Finally, my own legal counsel prepared and established the official Owen Trust this past week. All money contributed to this campaign will now go directly into that trust account and will be managed by a professional money manager, who we know well and trust completely.
I will serve as trustee and will work closely with Granny Lois to provide for the needs of the 6 minor children. Our first order of business will be a small, sweet cemetery plot that I have already arranged for so that we may lay our dear friends to rest properly, and provide a place where the children can go to remember and honor their parents. This will also provide some much needed closure as we all move forward, one day closer to a sweet reunion, in Heaven, with Jennifer and Scott.
The eldest brother, Ethan, continues to be an encouraging presence at the hospital for his two younger siblings. He is back to work and adjusting to life without his beloved parents. We will also be working to support and assist him as he too lost his parents, and we will provide in other ways for any needs that he may have going forward.
There are so many other incredible acts of mercy and kindness that I want to share but it would take days.
Most of all, I want to thank all of you who have generously contributed $5 all the way up to $7000 from the start of this campaign. I read every note and save many of them to share with the family later.
I am so thankful for how GoFundMe brings the world together in such an extraordinary way so that we may "love and help our neighbor," even if we don't know them personally.
May God bless you all as you have blessed this sweet family.

When our Lord was asked which is the greatest commandment,
"Jesus declared, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."
Matthew 22:37
"And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."
Matthew 22:39
