Dear people of the Boston music community,

ONCE Ballroom in Somerville is one of the last remaining independently-owned spaces around.

We learned today that the venue was vandalized and robbed. This is a tough blow, and just as the club enters into the historically leaner months on the concert calendar.

Please join together in offering support and throw them a line. This fund will assist the club in the fixes it needs and to face the aforementioned lean times.

Thank you.

(P.S. I am moved to help in the name of live music and as ONCE is home to the annual RUMBLE , I felt the void of its postponement this spring)

Weds 7/11

Hope you are getting over this sunny summer hump day, ONCE supporters-
We had a mind-blowing couple of shows this past weekend, first Future Teens on Friday night in the lounge, and then Screaming Females in the ballroom - both sold out!

It SMUSHED, per Future Teens. Both days people kept saying how loving the vibe was at both of those shows. A testimony to the reason we are all fighting to keep ONCE open while we rework the financial structure and develop sustainable funding.
Those conversations are happening, and they are exciting. We are talking with The City of Somerville as well as private folks. We have a lot of confidence, but as the Somerville Scout article said, “Rome was not built in a day” and these negotiations, which started weeks ago, will not be complete before autumn- and that is still scary.  The re-boot team knows now what we need to make it through the summer to mid-September when we can start to see some realistic attendance and strong programming. And we want you to know, too.
The venue needs to raise $60,000 to get through the summer and into mid Sept.

There you go.  Straight up.

That is three times the Go Fund Me ask, which felt high to us at the time Anngelle launched it. We got there, because art matters and live music is important and there are increasingly fewer places to make and see it in the Boston area. Now we know what the real number is to get ONCE to busy time, again.

That is it. Yes, we will keep trying to do it. If we didn’t think there was any chance we would have thrown in the towel and refunded you already.  We are discussing whether it is offensive to raise the ask like that, to reboot the GoFundMe?  Seems extreme, but also, it’s real.

The money we need is for:
• Liquor bills
• Rent
• Electricity
• Phone
• Cable
• Minimal staff
• License fees
• Minimum supplies like toilet paper and printer ink
• Marketing towards the fall (so important!)
• And a few other things, like the alarm system repairs we did after the robbery

You are on this email because you have given to ONCE (Thank you!). If you are not ok with what we are proposing, generally or specifically, we will refund you immediately, anytime, no questions asked.  Just message us and it is done. Believe me we get it, asking is really complicated.

Yesterday our beloved ticketing company, Ticketfly, offered monetary compensation for the time our website was down! We already loved them, they maintain our ticketing + our website, so they both went down in the crash and we definitely suffered for it. But they are also responsive people with names we know, and they came to us to say that they felt that they could offer some support to make up for the week we lost. Way to go, Ticketfly, so helpful at this tough juncture!

This is the sort of kindness you showed ONCE, too. Please be proud of the place you are protecting.

We know some local folks want to help in other ways.
You can help with stuff we need to do around the building that takes time with hands, and there is organizational writing that can be worked on out of the building.  To open that conversation just send a message, it’s really easy to do from the GoFundMe page.

And if you can, come to shows. This Friday night we have another local extravaganza with heavy hometown heroes, Worshipper, Devis’s Twins, Tigerman Woah and Heavy Necker.
So we will sign off til next time with THANK YOU!
You are going to make this work so ONCE will keep doing the things you love.

Art matters.

Again, thank you, more to come… onward and upward!!
Here’s a song to get you on your way this fine summer day.
We all have got to get ourselves back to the garden, half a million strong.
Thank you. Love you,
ONCE Somerville

Hi friends.
This is JJ, now.
Anngelle set up this campaign (thank you Anngelle!!) and has now transferred the management to ONCE with me as the designated point person. Go Fund Me required that action at a month to keep the campaign going. The money remains here, and although the goal is reached ONCE appreciates every donation coming in.
I hope you got to read our statement yesterday. If you have any questions the best way to reach me is Through this campaign which goes to our email.
We will be in touch again soon. Thank you so much for your care and support. We love you too.
Hugs, JJ for ONCE

July 6, 2018

Dear Friends of ONCE,
Thank you for your love and support. We know you have questions and we have endeavored to begin to answer them, here.

Our mission at ONCE is to foster and support local artists and their art, to bring great events to the area, and to be a gathering space for community.

In the past four years, ONCE has succeeded in this mission; bringing a cavalcade of amazing One Night Creative Events to our neighborhood. Events that combine music, art, dance, wrestling and circus. Flea markets with hundreds of local crafts people. Political letter writing campaigns, soulful beat poetry, stunning weddings and heavy metal shows. Performances geared towards parents and young kids, the legendary Rock and Roll Rumble and Moth radio story tellers. We at ONCE are very proud to have cemented a nurturing space in the cultural community by hosting a wide array of diverse events and partnering with thousands of artists.

ONCE is a cultural incubator and gathering space and it is also a business. It is a business that lives in a chaotic realm - balancing on a knife edge of reasonably priced tickets and drinks while paying artists, staff, licenses, utilities, rent, taxes etc. The business model is quite simple on paper, but in the heart of ONCE we prioritize art over the mundane which makes that knife edge all the more sharp and tricky to balance on.

Over the next few months you will see changes at ONCE. Our mission will remain the same as will our focus to foster and support local artists and their art, to bring cool events to the neighborhood, and maintain our deep ties to the community by being a gathering space. But we must transition and hone to keep the business viable.

Please note that while we transition to a new internal structure, the GoFundMe that was set up in an emergency situation will remain untouched until such time as we have designated a clear and specific use for the donations. Broadly, the money will be exclusively used to keep ONCE open. But we want our donors to have the specifics about for what exact purpose the money will be used, and we want to emphasize that donors always have the option of a refund if in any way they feel the cause they thought they donated to is different from the decision made. Donors will be notified directly through the GoFundMe regarding the use of the money.

Thank you to our donors, for kindness and generosity of pocket and spirit. The contributions of money and well wishes on the GoFundMe page have been giving us emotional support as we work to understand what is best done for the longevity of the venue.

Although it is unclear what the future state of ONCE will be, we sincerely hope you stick with us in continuing to realize our vital mission of focusing on local arts and artists. We have a full calendar in July with hundreds of talented artists relying on this community to support them. Please show your support of those artists and come to an event! We will have a quiet August as we regroup and though we are not sure when we will reopen, we hope to fill the Fall with even more exciting events to bring the cultural community that much closer together.

For the love of art, and with sincere gratitude, thank you for letting us be your venue.
