New York State Pavilion Preservation
We began 2014 on a high note...WE SURPASSED GOAL! This fundraising effort has remained open for donations which helps us with future maintenance and touch up. Thank you for your continued support and please spread the word! http://nyspproject.org
We held our first Open Gate event on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 1964-65 NY World/s Fair in April 2014 and two additional openings in May and October that year which were very successful.
2015 was also a great year for the pavilion. More events, more recognition, money for the towers and the amazing painting of the crown by the Structural Steel Painters Association and Union members. http://nyspproject.com/NYSPcrown.htm
Look for new progress reports as we continue our project and support other efforts into 2016. Thank you!
We are a grass roots effort lending support to preserving an iconic structure remaining from the 1964-65 New York Worlds Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York. We (John P.; Mitch S.; Stephanie B.; Gary M.; Jim B.; Tom B.; Ed G.; et. al.) have spent the past few years gathering donations of materials and paint to restore some dignity to the structure in hoping it raises awareness towards the restoration and reuse. We have completed the outside paint and started the interior in the spring of 2013. Designed by famed architect Phillip Johnson it has fallen into disrepair over the years. It has more recently been seen in movies like Men in Black and Ironman 2, as well as TV on CSI:NY.
The 50th anniversary of the opening of the fair had arrived in April 2014 and the pavilin looked great. We have since hosted several successful open ngate events at the pavilion. However, there is more to do! The money raised will go towards red, white and yellow paint and associated materials. Typical cost per gallon is approximately $35-45 but we hope to seek discounts from generous paint distributors and other private donations. Thank you!
Check out http://nyspproject.org and the media coverage of our events. Please note- No funds from this gofundme was used for any purpose other than purchasing paint and directly related materials for the maintenance and improvement of the structure.

Its been a fairly quiet season at the site of the pavilion so far but a busy season raising awareness for the future!
The Ideas Competition presented by the National Trust and People for the Pavilion, and sponsored by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz finished with the announcement of the winners a few days ago. The submissions covered a wide range of ideas from the practical to the whimsical. Check out the winners and all the other entries here: https://savingplaces.org/new-york-state-pavilion-ideas-competition#.V6cHQTU7V4m
Although the winning design will not be used as a scheme for renovating the pavilion, the purpose of the competition was very successful in bringing attention to the structure from all over the world.
The interest is gaining momentum and we hope to see progress in the work slated for the towers beginning soon.
Our crew has been busy keeping watch over the pavilion. Earlier this summer it was hit by vandals and an interior wall was covered with graffiti. Luckily we were on-site shortly after and got it covered up quickly!
Our project continues with plans to soon get back to painting and maintenance. The early summer was all rain and the mid summer was all heat! We are hoping for some good working weather.
Keep an eye out for an announcement later this season, We are hoping to be able to open the gates again in October. Nothing concrete yet but we will let you know first if it will happen.
Thank you again for supporting our project and our partners in helping the New York State Pavilion have a bright future!
Please try to make it out to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for the “Only in Queens Summer Festival” on Sunday June 26th!
The paint crew will be hosting another Open Gate event at the New York State Pavilion! Come on by, say hello and check out our displays.
Looking back at this gofundme campaign we are very grateful for the contributions from all of you. Our original goal was well exceeded. We believe the original event on April 22, 2014 which drew huge crowds on a Tuesday morning was a milestone and turning point for the pavilion. We worked extremely hard for years to make the pavilion presentable to the world. We could not have done it without your support then and your continued support. Thank you again. Be proud you are a part of the success.
With the crown painted, money allocated for the towers and the Ideas Competition in its home stretch, attention has not waned for the pavilion. We hope to see continued progress and success even if it is one baby step at a time.
We will be out there again this season doing what we can to maintain the structure. We have had a late start this year for several reasons but especially all that rainy weather. We will update our progress and seek more contributions to help soon. Check out our new reward structure!
Thanks again and we hope to see you on the 26th!
