Not Quite The Last Straw

Donation protected
For many people with disabilities, a plastic drinking straw is the only way to get fluids into their body on a regular basis.  They are not a trendy life-style choice, they are a basic necessity .

We use many such straws every week at the Day Centre where I work. Previously, we have just had to throw them away - straight into landfill.

But now, Terracycle UK have announced that they can take plastic straws and recycle them . But there is a cost involved and until such time as a manufacturer or other large company becomes involved, that cost has to fall to the recycler.

For £220.00 I can purchase one of Terracycle's "Zero Waste Boxes" for plastic straws. It is big enough to fit nearly SIXTEEN THOUSAND straws, so there will be plenty of room in it for other local people to recycle their plastic straws, too. When you consider that more than half a million plastic straws  are used and then thrown away every day worldwide, that may seem like a drop in the ocean. But maybe this small campaign with be the first step in a larger journey towards more comprehensive recycling solutions for not only straws, but for many of the other plastics that we use. Whether we want to, or not.

Please help me - even if you're not able to donate, you can still use your social media power to spread the word and raise awareness.

Thank you!
