NO MEGA PRISON AT FULL SUTTON

The government wants to build a new 1,440-inmate category C mega prison at Full Sutton, a tiny rural village of around 500 people nestling at the foot of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds.
This picturesque Yorkshire village will be overwhelmed by this huge facility, which will be built on pasture land a few steps from the village green.
Keith Hunter, the Police and Crime Commissioner for the Humberside Police is 100% against it. He thinks it is entirely the wrong place to build a huge prison, given the lack of local infrastructure, poor country roads and virtually non-existent public transport. He says that Yorkshire simply doesn’t need a new category C prison.
The light-controlled bottleneck at the historic river crossing in Stamford Bridge means that local traffic congestion is already at a critical level. The new prison would make matters far worse, with MoJ estimates of 31,800 trips to and from the facility each month. Nearly all these trips will be by car, via a village road and a single-track lane.
Halifax Estates is helping us to fight the development, but we need to raise more money if we are to succeed. We need to pay for everything from flyers and posters though to specialist professional advice. Donations will be carefully put to use in directly supporting the campaign against the prison. Any money left over once the campaign has ended will be donated to the Howard League for Penal Reform, which lobbies against the building of mega-prisons located miles away from offender’s homes.
The new prison will blight this beautiful area, the gateway to the Wolds, for decades to come. It will be 4 storeys high, floodlit at night, and clearly visible from miles around. This picture, taken from the Wolds, shows the extent of the prison site.
