Stress, Spirit and Science

$550 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 6 people in 11 months
It's time for me to broadly share the knowledge and wisdom I've acquired during more than 11 years of assisting public safety and citizens with grief, stress, trauma and disaster relief via the Bay Area Critical Incident Stress Management Team, the California Fire Chaplain Association, Jordan International Aid and others.

Your contribution will allow me to complete the book Stress, Spirit and Science,  which is bringing together recent insights from health psychology (hint, forget about stress reduction) with traditional spiritual wisdom. You'll also be enabling me to continue to offer local crisis intervention and deploy to major incidents such as the Haiti earthquake  and California fires (as in the photo of me by K-Love Crisis Response , above), by covering the costs of tuition and equipment.

See a summary on Slideshare.

My training and experience  have (at last!) qualified me to become an Approved Instructor with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. I have also recertified as an Emergency Medical Technician and am working on wildland fire certification, which includes challenging physical conditioning.

I have an immediate need  to cover the cost of tuition and testing for the instructor course - a bit more than $1,000. Uniforms and equipment - safety, communications and a Fireline EMT medical kit - carry a cost of nearly $4,000. Tuition, so far, has been more than $2,500.

My own journey through high-stress careers, trauma and losses, as well as the testimonials I receive from those I assist, convince me that I'm called to this work now. Help me continue it!

I'll happily send an autographed copy of the book to anyone donating $50 or more. And all contributors - financial, emotional or spiritual, will have my deep gratitude, of course. Although much of what I actually do in crisis intervention is confidential, my blog will offer regular updates and insights.

This morning, my heart is very much with friends of those killed by the Oakland warehouse fire. Being with some of them last week underscored the intensity of the pain that 36 groups of family and friends are feeling. We will be back with them this week.

Music at church on Sunday morning seems to always bring out feelings I have been holding onto during the previous week. This is a safe place, where friends help carry burdens, making them light.

I think I set a personal record today - six-hour-long crisis intervention. Happy to do it (and of course I can't talk about what it was.)

New blog post - Connecting Out.

The central teaching in Stress, Spirit, Science is that when we are well connected out, in and up, we can thrive under pressure. Many years ago, I had a powerful "connecting out" experience when I decided to take a risk by sharing a painful story.
