Newton City Council: Let us Vote

Donation protected
Hello All,

This is Lisa Gordon the treasurer for Opt Out Newton. We are raising funds to give Newton voters the opportunity on whether or not we would like pot stores in Newton. Cannabis would remain legal to grow, use, get mail order or home delivery, we just wouldn't have store fronts. Please contact [email redacted] with any questions!

Please note we will need to report all donations 8 days before the ballot question in November if we collect all the signatures. I'll be contacting everyone to verify: Name, Address, and if your donation is over $200 -- we will need occupation and employer (if relevant). This is in keeping with campaign finance regulations.

Update:

We are raising money to help get the word out and collect over 6,000 signatures before August 22nd. Money raised will go towards:

Printing
Signs
Web-hosting
and other expenses to reach our goal of getting 6000 signatures by August 22. Funds will be withdrawn to pay for all of the above and other necessary items that we need for the campaign.

Newton City Council: Let us vote whether we want to OPT OUT of retail marijuana sales

In 2016, Newton voters supported legalizing adult-use retail marijuana establishments. The language on the ballot added that local municipalities had the right to “adopt reasonable restrictions on the time, place and manner of operating marijuana businesses and to limit the number of marijuana establishments in their communities.” Newton voters, therefore, deserve the right to debate the issue of cannabis dispensaries—limiting or, if desired, opting out of them entirely.

It is incorrect to assume that if Newton voters were in favor of legalization that they must also be in favor of commercialization.

Selectmen and councilors in 40 Massachusetts towns (and counting) that voted YES on legalization have decided to put this question before the voters. That was the intent of the law and we ask that you fulfill this responsibility and put it on the November ballot giving Newton voters the opportunity to opt out.
