Hi, my name is Tom Wills. I'm a freelance journalist setting up a new not-for-profit organisation to support left journalism.
What is left journalism? Left journalism means ruthless criticism of all that exists. It seeks to:
- illuminate and question the role of capitalism in climate change, war and exploitation.
- elevate the voices of those who experience structural oppression, including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, disablism and classism.
- give due attention to social movements and workers’ struggles fighting back.
Left journalism is not propaganda. It is independent of political parties and independent of business.
The space for left journalism in the mainstream corporate media is extremely limited. So is the funding for left journalism from foundations. This is why we need The Newsroom, a grassroots organisation that will provide physical space, networking and recognition to make sure more left journalism gets produced and reaches a wide audience.

- What's happened so far? The Newsroom already has an office in Berlin, Germany, which provides workspace and equipment being used daily to produce left podcasts, newsletters, videos, articles and radio broadcasts. So far this has been funded by me and the other journalists using the space. We now need to make the project sustainable and expand our activities, increasing the number of people who are part of our network and launching public events and workshops.
- What will the funds be used for? This fundraiser will allow us to set up The Newsroom as a registered non-profit organisation headquartered in Berlin, Germany. Specifically, funds are needed now for legal fees, to finish setting up the office in Berlin, and to cover the costs of organising launch events. My work as coordinator of The Newsroom will continue on an unpaid basis. In the event that we raise excess funds, these will be donated to The Newsroom e.V. and used in line with its non-profit objectives.
