On February 26th, 2017, the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Philadelphia was found to have been vandalized. This is the most recent of a series of hateful acts that have befallen the Jewish community in our country recently. Let us stand up together and show that love and community will triumph over hate and bigotry.

I want to make sure that I am entirely transparent. I am a private individual raising these funds. I am not associated with any organization and I am not associated directly with the cemetery.
All funds will be donated directly to The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, who are independently raising funds for the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Philadelphia, as they are not an organization set up to recieve funds independently.

You are encouraged to donate to them directly, in order to avoid the fees associated with GoFundMe at:
https://www.jewishphilly.org/donate-now-mt-carmel-cemetery

UPDATE - Mt. Carmel Cemetery: Thank you to the community for all of your continued help and support.

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities to help with the repairs, please email - MtCarmelCemetery@JewishPhilly.org with your information and we will follow up when details are finalized. Please SHARE to spread the word.

A note from The Jewish Federation:
"Right now we are collecting the money as we know this will be a significant cost. The cemetery will be taking the lead and we will direct the money to them to help pay their bills. At this time the specific details other than that have not been determined, however the details will be available as we continue to work with the cemetery in the coming days. "

I'm not a big believer in fate, but I just found out something incredible. My wife Jennie was named after her great grandmother Jennie Schellenberg. As it turns out, her parents, Nathan and Theresa Schellenberg, my wife's great great grandparents, are buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. How fortuitous that I was inspired to raise funds for them, having no idea of my very personal connection. Luckily, their headstone was undamaged.

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for your wonderful outpouring of support. I did not imagine this would succeed to this extent! On that same note, I want to make sure that I am entirely transparent. I am a private individual raising these funds. I am not associated with any organization and I am not associated directly with the cemetery. The cemetery itself cannot receive these funds because they do not exist as an organization that accepts funds. Instead, these funds will be donated to The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, who are independently raising funds for this same cause at: https://www.jewishphilly.org/donate-now-mt-carmel-cemetery

Wendy, you are definitely better off donating to Federation directly. I set this page up before I saw they were raising funds, but I did not want to take it down because it was doing a great job spreading the word to people who may otherwise not have donated. I will post a picture of myself handing the check to Federation, and you can reach out to them independently to confirm that I have been in touch with them. Trust me when I say this is more of a burden than I thought. I did not actually expect it to get this much attention, and I certainly don't take the responsibility lightly given how substantial this has become. Thank you for your rightful concern!

Hi Zoe, I totally understand your concern. I am just a private person who is a member of the Philadelphia Jewish community. I have reached out to the Jewish Federation of Philadelphia for information on who to direct the funds to. From what I understand, they have the equipment to fix everything, just need the funds to make it happen. I am also expecting that a community cleanup effort will be made. I also plan on stopping by the cemetery tomorrow . I will post pictures of the checks after I write them for full transparency.

Hi Jenna, In answer to your questions: 1. My original goal $ amount was chosen a bit randomly by me, just knowing they would need at least that amount. It turns out they needed a lot more, but thankfully a lot of the labor and costs were donated by local unions. These funds are all being directed to The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, who will use any extra funds collected to help with security at other cemeteries and Jewish centers affected by these recent uptick in attacks. 2. As far as how else you can help, this particular cemetery should have what it needs at this point, but keep on doing what you are doing in general, and thank you for your work with the Shoah Visual History Foundation!

I am a former interviewer for the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation and I am honored to help raise money for your cause. Two questions: 1. I notice that thank goodness, you are over your stated goal. Will you be donating extra funds to other Jewish cemeteries that have been attacked--are there plans for the additional funds? 2. How else may I help? Yours truly, Jenna Blum, NYT bestselling author of Those Who Save Us
