Hi Everyone- My name is Gabriela Sevilla, I am a third year law student at Howard University School of Law from Newark,NJ - but I've lived in NE DC for the past 3 years. As an intern with Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless I was asked to be a legal observer at DC ordered encampment sweeps. It was there where I met Monica, Pete, and Sassy the dog who live in tent near Union Station. Monica has become a sister to me and since meeting them I continued to visit their tent and check in with food, socks, sweaters, and dog food.

Recently, their story was  featured in the Washington Post. Now everyone could see what I see. They were no longer invisible.

They spiraled into homelessness after their building was condemned and could use your help with a deposit and a few months rent for a new apartment . This could happen to anyone. Many of us are one bad day or one missed paycheck away from homelessness.

In DC we have an affordable housing crisis, the average 1 bedroom apartment is $1,310 per month which is out of reach for Monica and Pete. They have been living outside for years and are doing the best they can to get back indoors, but it has been exhausting.

They are loving people despite how cruel the world has treated them and would appreciate your support!  I am also helping them navigate the barriers they have to securing housing (No rental history, pay stubs) . If there are any small landlords in the DMV area willing to help this family please reach out.

Your donations so far have gone  toward interview clothes, sneakers, food, basic living necessities, and  a new cellphone and plan.  The  rest of the funds will go towards a security deposit,  several months of rent, and utility bills. Monica was a front end supervisor at Price Rite in Maryland for 7 years - if you know of any similar job opportunities in DC please reach out.

I have been working with Monica to create a bank account, we are waiting for her debit card to come in the mail.  The funds will be transferred to that account and I will be reimbursed for our shopping trips for basic life necessities we have done so far.

From the article:

Down she spiraled.

“I’m dying out here!” she said to no one. “I’m dying out here! Please, I need help!”

“Monica!” Pete finally shouted. “Calm your voice down!”

Now she was addressing the people on the streets.

“Acknowledge us!” she said. “We’re human beings! Please, just acknowledge us!”

Hello everyone, This is amazing ! The three of us went to get much needed haircuts on Friday. We viewed a promising apartment yesterday and will be submitting an application for it. Monica and Pete hope with the money raised that they will never be homeless again. They plan on setting up a trust or paying rent years in advance. Again if there is a landlord willing to work with us please reach out- these rental applications present barriers like credit checks.

Sassy has a no-cost vet check up set up for Tuesday thanks to an awesome woman who offered to help ! She was also offered a pet shopping spree by another gracious woman - Thank you all!

Many have reached out about donating furniture, once we have secured permanent housing we will be all set. Thank you!

I also encourage folks to donate furniture to organizations like A Wider Circle http://awidercircle.org and Do Kind Works https://www.dokindworks.org/about/ who aim to provide furniture to families transitioning from homelessness to housing .

We understand that the homelessness crisis in DC and across the nation is much bigger that just Monica and Pete . Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, where I am an intern, also has an emergency fund for folks experiencing or at risk of Homelessness- just so you know :) https://www.legalclinic.org

Hi Everyone :) We wanted to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts! @DoKindWorks has offered to furnish their new apartment ! We had Denny's for breakfast, went to TJ Maxx for interview clothes, the Nike Factory store for walking shoes, and the DC Humane Rescue Alliance for information about the pet pantry and a new leash for Sassy. We are reaching out to see if Pete & Monica are eligible for free veterinary care for Sassy. She has a skin condition that we want to have checked out.

Thank you all who shared pictures of your doggies we loved them ! Pete also wanted folks to remember to Adopt if you can because the shelter was full of beautiful and sweet dogs.

Wish Monica luck on her interview tomorrow :) We will be apartment hunting this week and hope for the family be housed before the April 4th encampment sweep.

Please message me on here or follow my twitter if you have leads on apartments in the DMV /NE DC area or information on free veterinary care. I have an update video on twitter too @gabrielasevi

Best,

Gabi

Thank you everyone! Monica, Pete, and Sassy feel very blessed ! They would like to keep the gofundme running to be able to afford a couple of month’s rent to give them time to get stable.

Monica has an interview Monday ! I’m taking Monica and Pete out tomorrow to buy interview clothes . Pete needs new walking shoes he is a size 9 and would prefer new balance walking shoes.

A group of students donated dog food ! So Sassy is good ! But she definitely needs her own bed .

Right now all their clothes are for the winter and would love your help with getting new summer clothes !
Clothing sizes : Monica is a Large/XL
Pete is a S/M in shirts and Pants 30/32 .

They would also benefit from gift card donations .

Best
