Mini Filters for Puerto Rico
Donation protected
Update 12/22: We're done collecting! Don't give us any more money! If you missed your chance to donate, fret not. You can donate to these folks, who are in P.R. installing larger water filters for villages: https://www.facebook.com/WaterforPuertoRico/
I'll leave the original story here, so you can see what this is about:
I have an opportunity to efficiently save lives, and I want you to help me. Following Hurricane Maria, people in Puerto Rico are falling ill and dying due to lack of clean water. An associate of mine here in New York will very shortly visit his home in P.R., and I intend to give him a suitcase full of tiny but incredibly effective water filters to bring with him, to distribute as needed. These are being provided *at cost* by the manufacturer.
Mailing packages to Puerto Rico is currently very unreliable. (I'm sure the postal service is doing the best they can with the infrastructure.) By bringing these filters along as luggage, they are getting shipped reliably and free of charge. The discount also triples our buying power! If you have been saving your money for a perfect opportunity to do a whole lot of good with a modest contribution, this is your chance.
To be clear, 100% of the proceeds of this campaign will go toward buying the filters. I will cover all other expenses, such as the suitcase and the initial shipping to receive the filters, as well as putting plenty of my own money toward buying filters. The filters are the Sawyer Mini Water Filtration Systems. When I bought one for myself, the camping enthusiasts at the store recommended Sawyer because it is a much finer filter than the other common option (thus removing more bacteria), and lasts practically forever (because you can clean it by forcing water through it backward until it runs clear). I've used mine a few times, and it's very easy: You just drink through it, either from an attached bag of water or straight from a water source through an attached straw. Reviewers have confirmed its continuing functionality after five years of use.
My esteemed associate has contacts in P.R. who are already involved in delivering supplies to isolated villages. They will be able to get the filters where they need to go.
To make this work, I need three things from you. First, money. Second, please spread the word of this campaign, because we have a *very* limited time frame before my associate is due to leave New York. Third, money. We have a lot of filters to buy, and the more we buy, the more lives we can save!
If you know me, you know that I love helping people, and you know that I love being efficient. This is the only crowdfunding campaign that I have ever set up, because this is the first time that I have had the opportunity to use money this efficiently to save lives. Your donation will allow me to help more people, earning both my joy and my profound gratitude. Thank you so much!
As an aside, I must also give respect and thanks to Sawyer. As a company, they have already donated over 10,000 filters toward relief efforts following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. They are producing versions of two of their filters in cheaper packaging, and selling those at cost for further relief efforts (not for retail). This means that we're paying $9.00 instead of $25-$30 per filter (and as a bonus, they'll fit more compactly in luggage than the retail clamshells would). Thanks to this consideration, we can get three times as many filters to Puerto Rico as we would otherwise!
Thanks for reading, for sharing, and for helping us to help others!
