Local News
As a consequence of tightening border restrictions, many pregnant women are now stuck at the Mexican-US border without adequate perinatal care. Haitian  and African women and families have traveled north to apply for refugee status in the US after natural disasters have wrecked their countries or they are escaping dangerous homelands, only to be denied entry to cross the border to receive care. The Office of Human Rights from the State of Tijuana government has reached out to the Mexican Association of Midwives for help with the brewing humanitarian crisis on the border. Just 6 months ago, there were only 8 shelters, and now there are 36 to meet the growing need.

Women's Shelter.

In concert with the Mexican government, and through conversations with Cristina Alonso of dAsociación Mexicana de PARTERÍA, One World Midwives is organizing emergency maternity aid to support the women in need with immediate, emergency, appropriate, necessary and sustainable perinatal care with the 2 local midwives and birthworkers who have already been selflessly doing the work they can.

On 5 March 2017, we began our week meeting with midwives, social workers, and NGOs that work in the migrant population to gain a better understanding of the growing crisis. We continued the week visiting with doctors, shelter workers, and visiting a shelter where we offered prenatal care.

In the end we met with a Matrona of a shelter and the Secretary of Human Rights for Tijuana and presented our project.  They were very excited and want to make this happen for all underserved women.

We support women and families worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering emergency midwifery aid to women and families affected by conflict, disasters, or lack of local sufficient midwifery or women’s healthcare in the effort to reduce infant and maternal mortality worldwide.
