Maternity Leave for Eden at Secession

$9,617 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 155 people in 5 months
I am very excited to announce that Baby Luca will be here in March. I have been busy nesting and getting his nursery ready. I have owned Secession Art & Design for 12 years and have dedicated my life to supporting over 70 independent artists and designers. I love San Francisco but was completely shocked when I found out that shop owners are not eligible for maternity leave through disability. We pay into this for our employees, but when it comes to us we are told that it is our responsibility.

A mom who owns a bakery told me she had her baby and was back into the kitchen with a newborn within a week. It was a choice between the closure of her business or business as usual. We should not have to choose between motherhood and ownership. I have tried really hard to save money to help with my transition and buy some time, but it is almost impossible to save with the rising cost of rent, paying employees, insurance, and unexpected costs. The city is not supporting my motherhood journey, so I am asking you to be my village and donate to my gofundme.

The money I raise will be used for additional employment and rent assistance. I'd like to be able to take the first two weeks off after Luca is born, and hire an employee to cover the hours I would usually work.

Thank you to Bianca Levan for the image above - her papercut art is featured in Secession's gallery through March 31.

Thank you to our loyal friends and customers for all your support during Luca's adventure into this world. In the past four months, Luca has been by my side while I have worked, curated, installed shows, and hosted art and fashion parties. He is very social and loves to give you a smile when he's not sleeping.

Thank you to the customers who are understanding when Luca cries or is eating when I'm showing you jewelry. Owning a store and being a new mom is an emotional whirlwind. There are never enough hours to get everything done. I am rolling with the journey, and I love that Luca is getting to meet so many amazing customers, artists, designers, and musicians.

This Mother's Day weekend, please help me reach my goal of $10k towards my maternity leave fundraiser by sharing this page. Luca is now 6 weeks old. Your support has allowed me to take two beautiful weeks off and continue my leave Monday through Friday. Working Saturdays & Sundays with a newborn has been an adventure!

So much of being a new mom is finding moments of rest. One of my rituals is playing a playlist that my husband and I made at the hospital. I listened to this mix loud while Luca entered this world. When we are napping, I often play these songs. You can listen to "Luca Henry Got Born" on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/user/22dhigwrsb2n26fvkqynrxikq/playlist/6208iyzPsR3Lu1EHcz8G3i?si=wggwEBb9Ql6zZwcGbPVdPQ. This is my gift to you, and I am forever thankful for everyone who has donated, shopped and supported our journey.

This weekend, you'll automatically be entered to win a print of our fundraiser art created by Bianca Levan, "Keep Some Room in Your Heart for the Unimaginable." One lucky person who donated or shopped at Secession will get to own this piece.

Secession Art & Design has been my baby for the past 12 years. I have dedicated my time and love for curating to a community of artists and designers. 20 days ago, I welcomed my baby boy into the world. Thank you to everyone who donated to my maternity leave and shared it on Facebook. I was able to take two weeks from working the gallery full time. I have gently returned back to work (part-time).

Baby Luca helped with his first art install and attended his first art opening at the gallery for the opening of Shane Izykowski's Midnight Moon in the Garden of Goodbye. I spent most of the night feeding and cuddling, but it warmed my heart to see the gallery full of customers and new friends celebrating our dark and beautiful Spring show.

Support Secession and this new mama by shopping this weekend 12-7pm. Luca may be awake enough to give you a smile.

I want you to all meet baby Luca. He was born on March 20, on the super moon and the first day of spring, a passionate and experimental Pisces. I had a natural birth at The Mission Bernal Hospital, aka St. Luke's. He was delivered by an all-women team who helped me do what felt like the impossible. I have never felt more supported by not only medical professionals, but by women who knew my story of living and working in the neighborhood. After the pain, pushing, and pure bliss, these powerful women brought me a double scoop of Mitchell's ice cream. Thank you to everyone who has been there for my journey to mamahood, shopped, and donated to my maternity leave fundraiser. I am healing, bonding, and loving every moment that I have to spend with Luca and my husband Jason.
