Loving Brytani

Donation protected
Many of you saw the post I made several months ago about becoming a host for an asylum seeker from the border. This issue keeps me up at night, and opening my home to someone fleeing her country is one thing I can do about it. I know if I were knocking on the door of a country for fear of my life, I’d want someone to open the door. My door is open. Brytani is here, and we need a community.

Brytani is from Honduras. She came here with a caravan of transwomen who are not safe in their home communities. Upon arriving in the United States, she spent four months in a detention center before being released with a sponsor in New Orleans. That housing situation was wonderful and beautiful, but not long term. Brytani is living with me through the end of the year until a more long-term situation becomes available.

I will not share details of her story here, as it is her story to tell. However, I will tell you that I almost wrecked my car on the skinny part of Poplar as she was telling me the harrowing details of it. She is brave and strong, funny and energetic. She is passionate about social justice and community organizing, and her favorite color is pink.

I am a big believer in “it takes a village.” Join me as we create a village around her, welcoming her and making sure she knows she is loved, safe and taken care of. I’ve crunched the numbers, and it looks like there will be $700 of additional expenses/month to support her while she’s here, as she is not allowed to work for three more months. Anything you can do to help make this stay more comfortable is much appreciated. If you prefer to donate goods, here are some things we need:

-Women's large coat

-Warm socks

-Toiletries: lotion, moisturizer, toothpaste, body wash, deodorant

-Kroger gift cards

-Your best Church lady casserole

-Medium men’s Joggers in (Black, Gray, Red or Pink)

-Size 12 women’s tennis shoes

-Large women’s gloves

-Warm women’s hat

-Warm scarf

-International phone card

If you have questions about this process, her status or how asylum seekers fit in with immigration law, send me a message. I’d be happy to chat.
