Let's go home, Edge

Edge is my first-born boy child. He just turned 6 months this January. He babbles a lot and would love to smile with you with simple baby talks.

He had a fever that does not completely subside for more than three weeks now. As a parent, having a fever in his age would be alarming so we initially consulted the Emergency Room of a certain tertiary hospital to determine the cause. The complete blood count (CBC) obtained that time would indicate that it was viral. We were told that it would resolve on its own. After three days, the fever was still there and we consulted Edge's Pediatrician about the matter. Oral antibiotics were suggested in case Edge's fever would not subside the following day. My wife and I were hesitant to use any antibiotics for Edge since this might harm his young liver. We decided to bring Edge again to a nearby hospital when we noticed that his fever is still there two days after the consultation with his Pediatrician was done. We were admitted because of urinary tract infection (UTI) and bacterial pneumonia. Antibiotics were given but the fever did not go away. On our second day of admission, we noticed that Edge's abdomen was big. He looked bloated. His Pediatrician suspected that it might be because of infection. At the same time, Edge started to have loose stool marked with mucus of colors yellow and green.  X-ray and CT Scan were ordered to check his abdomen. It was found out that Edge has an enlarged kidney, liver, and spleen, which his Pediatrician thinks could result from possible infection. Stronger antibiotics were administered and still the fever did not go. On our fifth day of admission, Edge started to look pale and would show laboured breathing. This is why we were endorsed to a tertiary hospital.

Edge was admitted at the ICU for four days. Blood laboratories and ultrasound were administered. Edge's hemoglobin, hematocrit, wbc, and platelet dropped which suggest that his oxygenation in blood is insufficient and that it cannot promote systemic healing and fight infection. Two blood transfusions were done to compensate for the dropped blood laboratories. Edge's ultrasound in his abdomen indicates that the same organs are enlarged. Stronger antibiotics were given but his fever is still there. Bone marrow extraction was ordered when the doctors eventually found out that immature cells were seen in his blood stream. The procedure diagnosed Edge with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) which is very rare in his age. This means that he will continue to have the same condition until it is addressed with proper management. We are battling with time since the malignant cells are continuously progressing. Right now, we are considering all possible management appropriate for his age. The succeeding two months shall be critical for us to save Edge. And his management care also requires us to spend a substantial amount of money because of chemotherapy , It is with a humble heart that we ask your kind hearts to offer any assistance as it would greatly help in supporting our current running hospital bill and the treatment he will undertake to give him a fighting chance on life.

God's wisdom is greater than ours.  Although the current statistics show that the prognosis is small, we have a bigger God who makes all things possible. This is why we also ask for your prayers as this will help Edge and us in this long journey that we're going to take. God Bless your hearts. We thank you all in advance.
