Let’s make Signs for Change a movement

Donation protected
The idea for Signs for Change came from noticing that there’s a shortage of volunteers at animal rights events, so after reading several responses asking why that might be from a poll I created, I felt compelled to create an action that would be easier for those people to come out and join us more.

The gist of Signs for Change:

Volunteers hold up large pro vegan messaged signs on overpasses where traffic is heavy and chalk the overpass’ pathway where pedestrians walk across with the same messages. We’re also going to be doing this at other locations besides overpasses and implementing clean-ups at whichever location we hold our events.

This event is super simple in its design. We just ask that you show up ready to hold up a sign for commuters to see. Our signs have been homemade on cheap  material, but due to the quality of our sign material, we’ve had to contend with strong winds blowing our signs away and tearing the corners where we’re holding them. I’d like to buy better quality signs that can resist the wind and be waterproof in the event of rain. The signs we need have to be large enough for the cars to see from a distance and it helps if they have holes with metal rings to keep them secured to the overpasses.

Things we’ll be purchasing with your donations:

2-way radios to communicate with. Sure, we can all use phones but I’d like to have multiple overpasses covered at a time and appoint leaders for each overpass to be in direct contact with each other in case of any issues with pedestrians or law enforcement.

Knee pads for chalking. Like I said before, I want this to be super simple for everyone and I want to eliminate any possible reason for someone saying they can’t participate. Chalking involves crouching and kneeling on hard pavement for a period of time. Knee pads will help our volunteers stay comfortable while they work on their masterpieces.

Better signs. Again, we need better signs and rather than painting black latex paint on painters drop cloth, I want to see signs that we can reuse for many years to come.

If I can raise half the money for my goal, we’ll be off and running smoothly, if I can get the full amount, it will allow me to create a website to help create chapters in other cities. I want Signs for Change to become a movement. There are so many advertisements along any given highway but not enough signs displayed talking about climate change and the cause, or animal agriculture and the cruelty that we pay for whenever we make the wrong food choices. People need to be made aware of the things that truly matter and not how many miles away the next McDonald’s is. If one of our signs that reads “Watch Earthlings on YouTube” can help someone go vegan, we’re succeeding in our mission.

Our last event (which was our first) showed us something I was not expecting; positive support from the drivers passing by. Drivers were honking their horns and excitedly waving their arms outside of their windows to let us know they were in agreement with what we were doing. That’s why I’m determined to make our next event even better. Please help us achieve our goal. Thank you.
