Let's help Fred

This is about Fred. Fred is one of the most selfless and kind-hearted human beings I’ve ever met! He is one of those silent heroes no one talks about. Today I want to change that and tell you his story.

When I met Fred as a volunteer in Kenya a few months ago, I almost had to push him to tell me about his life, not because he has nothing to tell but because he is so humble and doesn't want to be the center of attention. His story nothing but blew me away:

Fred believes in volunteering. In fact, he committed his whole life to this selfless work. So for the last 18 years he worked full time as a volunteer. Over almost 2 decades, he has worked with countless street families, vulnerable youth, single mothers, people living with HIV, and communities living in informal settlements in Kenya.

18 years of serving full-time on a voluntary basis without earning a single penny, only dependent on goodwill and occasional stipend is incredible already. But what struck me the most was when Fred told me that he doesn’t have money/savings himself. It turned out that he is so selfless that he even struggles with his own family to make a living. In fact he lived many years of his life in a slum, like many of the slum and street children he helped every single day. Yes you heard right, He lived in a slum himself just to be able to continue volunteering full-time and doing good deeds on a daily basis. How selfless is that?

Over the course of all these years Fred naturally has built up a huge network and knows more about volunteerism in Kenya and Africa than most other people do. That’s when political leaders became aware of him and started to engage with him. Fred's vision is to make volunteering easier in Kenya and so he began to work and is still working with the Kenyan government to develop a National Volunteerism Policy and Law. Every day he is fighting for his goal. But while others in Kenyan politics work towards getting huge salaries, have private drivers etc. Fred still humbly wants to remain a volunteer and  selflessly commutes 2-3 hours to work with public transportation every single day.

However, I know Fred has a dream. From October 15-20th 2018 there is the World Volunteer Conference, in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. It would be one of Fred’s dreams to come to Germany, to speak to the audience, to represent Kenya and to tell his story. In fact the jury was so fond of him that they already offered him a speaking opportunity and they also said that they would pay his accommodation. However, the flights and living expenses in Germany are still impossible to cover for Fred when you work on zero income. That's why Fred, like many others from Africa usually misses out on many great opportunities and platforms like these, where they can give the true narrative of the African story and dream.

Therefore, let us help Fred. Please support me to raise the Airfare tickets + some expenses for Fred. Let us give back to this selfless man who would have never asked for it himself. I humbly encourage you to make a donation, even just a few Euros are so appreciated. Even if you don’t donate money you can still do good by just sharing this message. Thank you so much in advance.

PS: There is not much time left. But if we make it, I will update a picture or Video of Fred presenting in Bavaria. Thank you =)
