Let Luqman Stay in the UK

£1,416 of £2,500 goal

Please support Luqman's campaign to stay in the UK by donating towards his legal costs.

Luqman Onikosi came to the UK to study at the University of Sussex in 2007.

In the middle of his degree course, he became ill. He was diagnosed with Hepatitis B, which has led to a chronic liver condition. Luqman's two brothers in Nigeria have since died from the same disease.

Luqman and his friends in Brighton and across the UK are campaigning for him to be allowed to stay in the country. Britain is where his friends are and where he can find the medical care he needs to live with his condition. If he is forced to return to Nigeria it is likely he will face the same fate as his siblings.

In January 2018 the Home Office rejected Luqman's application for leave to remain in the UK. But thanks to many generous supporters, Luqman has lawyers to represent him and they have won the right to appeal against the decision.

This means Luqman can take his case to the immigration tribunal. We expect that he will receive Legal Aid to cover some of the costs. But important parts of the case - under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights - will not qualify.

All proceeds will be used to pay for Luqman Onikosi's legal representation and fees. In the event that we raise excess funds, these will be donated to Thousand 4 1000 (T4K), a charity in Brighton that supports people denied access to housing because of their immigration status, registration no. 1171590.

We have surpassed £1,250, which is 50% of our target.

This is a fantastic achievement and means that funding for the next stage of Luqman's legal fight is secure.

We'll continue spreading the word over the next couple of weeks to build even more support for Luqman.

If you know anyone who might not have heard about the campaign yet, please tell them about it.

Transparency note: Funds raised so far will be withdrawn by Tom Wills, a friend of Luqman's and organiser of the crowdfunding campaign. These will be transferred immediately and in full to Luqman's client account at Wilson's Solicitors.

We've had a brilliant response to the campaign so far. In just 5 days we've managed to raise £900.

Here's a message from Luqman:

"Thank you. This has caught me by surprise - it's unbelievable. It's fantastic that so many people are showing support."

Will you help us make it to £2,500?

The most effective thing you can do is contact a few friends, tell them you've donated and ask them to do the same.

Facebook and Twitter posts are really useful too - you can use the hashtag #LetLuqmanStay

Thank you again for your support - it means a lot.
