Help Provide Legal Aid to Women & Children in the Border Crisis
Don't just read and post about the border crisis—do something about it! We need your help to provide pro bono legal representation to mothers and their children at the border. Whitaker Legal, LLC will match dollar for dollar any contributions we receive up to $5,000.
Our team at Whitaker Legal, LLC has decided to volunteer our time and expertise by traveling to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas in early 2019. Recent changes to immigration policies (including the rise in family separations and detentions) are devastating the lives of people trying to find safe passage through our borders. We’ll be on the ground for one week representing women and children at the border with upcoming immigration court hearings and asylum interviews. Our attorney, paralegal, and legal assistants will be providing free information and immigration resources to those who need it most.
Women and children arrive at our borders seeking refuge after fleeing violence, suffering, and danger. In Central American countries, gangs are forcibly recruiting boys to join their ranks; they rape, enslave, and even murder young girls when they become pregnant. Mothers are victimized by physical and sexual violence at the hands of their partners who their governments are unable or unwilling to control. On their trip to the U.S. to seek protection under our asylum laws, they face exhaustion, dehydration, rape, robbery, and being kidnapped and held for ransom by Mexican gangs along the way.
They are apprehended at the border and held in hieleras (facilities nicknamed “iceboxes” because they are set at low temperatures in order to shock and freeze detainees who are often wet from crossing the river or sweating from the Texas heat) and perreras (detention facilities nicknamed “dog pounds” because of their resemblance to a dog kennel). These practices have long been used as an attempt to deter immigrants from entering the U.S.; when they weren't effective enough to deter, we began separating parents from their children. Eventually women and children are transferred to long term detention facilities like the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas where we’ll be going.
The South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas is the largest immigrant family detention center, un-affectionately known as a “baby jail” because it detains infants to teens along with their mothers. It is located approximately 80 minutes southwest of San Antonio and has the capacity to hold up to 2,400 women and children.
At the pro bono legal services trailer in the Dilley detention facility, these asylum seekers meet—often for the first time—people who want to help them, not harm them, rape them, take advantage of them, or detain them. It is imperative that these women get sound legal representation and you can help us provide it to them! Immigrants in detention are four times more likely to be released from detention with the help of a lawyer. Without a lawyer, 98% percent of immigrants lose their case in immigration court.
