Support for Daniel Lister

$1,800 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 34 people in 30 months
Staff Sargeant Daniel Lister is a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Afghanistan. He fought for our freedoms overseas and suffered grave injuries - including a leg amputation -, but back at home, he's now fighting a battle with an overzealous Home Owners Association.

The Chandler Grove HOA in Gwinnett County has fined and sanctioned SSG Lister for the unsightly grass length and the location of his trashcans on his property. What started with a $450 fee, that is now delinquent, has turned into a $2,000 obligation. The HOA is also trying to charge Lister for attorney's fees accruing for the HOA, and the organization has gone as far as to file a lien against his home.

The HOA has complained about where he keeps his trash cans (a location that is easy for him to access in a wheelchair), pinestraw dispersement, and the grass not being cut in a timely manner.

SSG Daniel Lister, who is just 35-years-old, is an American hero. He is also a single dad of two children, one of whom is autistic. His family lives out of state, so caring for his home is difficult. The difficulties are exacerbated by his chronic debilitating pain, having already had one leg amputated, and fighting the battle to avoid losing his other leg. His injuries, obviously, forced him to medically retire and he is a Purple Heart recipeint.

Legal counsel has been contacted to assist SSGLister, but he needs help now. This is an opportunity for us to help a man, a servant, a hero, who put his life on the line for all Americans alongside many of his friends who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

It is, simply put, unacceptable for our veterans to endure the deplorable conditions of a combat zone only to return home to the hostility of a Home Owners Association.

He needs our help and, most importantly, our prayers.

Every dollar raised will go DIRECTLY to Staff Sgt Lister and his family - hopefully ahead of the holidays.

MORE INFORMATION:
Under the Bank of America Purple Heart program, reclaimed homes are renovated by the financial institution by installing new flooring, updating appliances, and applying fresh paint. Veterans are obligated to pay property taxes and insurance for three years.  After completing the three year program, the veteran is given the deed to the home. Lister successfully completed the three year program and is the holder of the deed to his home. He is still responsible for all of the expenses.

Thank you for your dedicated service to our country, Daniel. Your homeowners association's board of directors not only owes you an apology, but by law, they are required to make a "reasonable accommodation" including an exception, or adjustment to a rule or policy for a disabled person to have an equal opportunity to use his dwelling. Unfortunately, the board has the power to foreclose on owners and take away their homes unless they are stopped. I hope this campaign raises 10 times the amount requested.
