Last Drive-in Theater in the U.P.

Tax deductible
The Upper Peninsula Film Union operates the last drive-in theater in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. For the last three years we have been bringing great drive-in movie events to the people of the Upper Peninsula (and beyond - seriously people have come from all over to our events).

We host movie events that are free of charge to everyone plus we let nonprofits groups operate our concession stand to help them raise funds for their organization. To date the concession stand has helped local nonprofits raise over $5000. As these events grow so will the ability of these nonprofits to generate even more revenue for their mission.

The Highway 2 Drive-in (also known as the Cinema 2 and the Manistique Drive-in) has been officially closed for nearly two decades and for much of that time the property has been for sale. It has been very close to being sold several times to interests that would not have used it as a drive-in theater. In fact they would have destroyed what remains and the last drive-in in the U.P. would have been gone forever.

The Upper Peninsula Film Union with the help of mBank has been able to temporarily remove the drive-in from the market but we still need to raise funds to secure it permanently.  We believe that there are a lot of people who remember and love their local drive in and would like to help save the last one in a region.

We actually need more money than this as the property and the concession stand both need significant repairs and updates. If we exceed our goal there are plenty of other places we need to put dollars to help bring the place up to date and make it very, very cool.

We urgently need this money. As the credits were rolling for the final movie of the season, we were inside the concession stand taking the ceiling down so we can begin the process of repairing the roof before winter really sets in. The roof is leaking significantly and we need to work to stop the problem before things get worse. We really need funds soon to continue the work we have started, preserve and secure the the property and start getting ready for another fun season of drive-in events in 2019.

We are unique in that we are one of only two nonprofit drive-in theaters in the country. We are also the only one who uses the concession stand to benefit other nonprofits.

There are so many good things for the community with this drive in. We offer family friendly events that are free to everyone. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, everyone can attend our drive-in movie events free of charge thanks to our generous sponsors who pay the film licensing fees. On top of that the benefit the concession operating nonprofits receive is almost immeasurable. Yes, they keep the concession money but they also build awareness to their organization. This is such a win for everyone.

We love movies and we love making these events happen for people near and far. Every penny we raise goes directly to keeping this drive-in theater alive and well for everyone.

Please share this fundraiser far and wide. Even if you cannot contribute. The more people who are aware of it the better the chances of saving the last drive-in theater in the Upper Peninsula are.

Thank you. With your help we will surely be able to preserve this slice of Americana for everyone to enjoy.
