I would like to invite you to meet an amazing young man called Thomas, the Thomas this page is dedicated to..... but sadly you cant…. Thomas is dead!

This incredible young man was let down by a system which claims to care, a system which claims to work on Best Interests and Person Centred Principles, a system shrouded in secrecy.

Thomas had Downs Syndrome and Autism - does that mean his life was any less important? - does it mean his thoughts and feelings, hopes and dreams were any less important?

Thomas stopped breathing at the specialist unit, (a place he did not want to be in, miles from his family) and died two days later in hospital. He never regained consciousness. We don't know what happened to him.

There is a major safeguarding investigation called for and a preliminary one happening now.

He had suffered abuse, neglect, over medication, restraint and torment by people paid to 'care' for him during four years in 'the system'.

Now we have to make sure accountability is accepted, and this never ever happens again. Justice for Thomas and his family isn't a nice thing to want - it is an essential thing to need!

This GoFundMe page is to raise funds for legal costs incurred by Thomas's family while fighting for justice - for campaign materials, travelling and accommodation expenses where essential.

This is what Paula had to say before Thomas' funeral:

Thomas is home!

Thomas is only a ten minute walk from me now. I can see him whenever I want.

No visiting hours as there was in the atu

So close I could see him everyday until I say my final goodbye.

I can stay as long as I like

I can walk away safe in the knowledge nobody is going to hurt him anymore

It's a crime that only his death has allowed that!!

Please continue to show your support by sharing this update with your friends and colleagues.

Katie, Zoe and Debs
RIP Thomas

£3,470 raised so far. This is amazing.

We need to continue raising money though.

Thomas died in uncertain circumstances. For peace of mind his family need to find out exactly what happened. This can only be done by a second post-mortem and an inquest.

We are raising money to cover the cost of the second post-mortem, legal fees and any ongoing associated costs. WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP to raise this large amount of money.

Anyone wishing to donate money via cheque instead of Go fund please email us

Katie@bringingustogether.org.uk

Some supporters have offered to run fundraising events locally in order to raise money for Thomas' fund. If you can do anything......cake sales, sponsored events etc, please get in touch

Thank you so much for all your donations – it is quite overwhelming to witness the generosity of so many people who don’t necessarily know the family, but are touched by their story.

We want to be as transparent as possible about how your donations will be spent.

Here is what we know at this stage about what will be needed.

The funeral:
According to a study at the University of Bath’s Institute for Policy Research, on average, the price of a typical funeral, including non-discretionary fees and a burial or cremation, is £3,456. The average amount spent on extras such as a memorial, flowers and catering is £2,006.

We understand that the family will be meeting these costs.

The inquest
The cost of legal representation at an inquest (legal aid is not available) is in the region of £20K. Paula and family do not have this kind of money.

Taking care of Paula’s emotional wellbeing
* Counselling
* Legal debt (from previously trying to have Thomas brought home)

For the future - campaigning
When she is ready, Paula wants to engage in campaigning – both out of respect to Thomas’ memory and raise awareness to make sure this doesn’t happen to other families.

There will be costs to support campaigning e.g. travel and subsistence to attend and speak at meetings (an estimate of £800 per year); contribution towards home telephone bill (an estimate of £200 per year).

Thanks again
Zoe, Katie and Deb

good luck in your campaign for justice for Thomas, you have many people who support you. I have an autistic child and it is important that our children have the same rights and opportunities as others and are treated with the respect they deserve , I am very sad that this was not the case for Thomas, a live lost too young
