Please join us in helping an elderly woman fix her home to brace for the cold Chicago winter.
Work needed: roof and siding repair, updating her kitchen area to be more senior-friendly, and people with expertise in construction or remodeling to donate their time to this project.

Hi, folks!
Our names are Mayra Diaz and Erendira Carrillo, graduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Last year, a former student of the university began a fundraiser to repair the home of an elderly woman from the Little Village community. Her house is currently in unlivable conditions and unequipped to shield her from the cold weather. As a single mother of five, including one child with disabilities, she was unable to keep up with home repairs throughout the years, leading to extensive damage. Please read her full story below.
Despite her hardships, she is one of the sweetest, most kind-hearted people that we have had the pleasure of working with and has inspired us to continue fundraising on her behalf. At this time, we are in need of additional funds to continue construction on her home. Please consider assisting us with a donation. Any little bit helps! Or, if you have connections to organizations that can donate materials, please let us know. We are also looking for volunteers with experience in construction who would be willing to donate their time towards this project. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Somos Mayra Diaz y Erendira Carrillo, y somos estudiantes de maestría en la Universidad de Illinois de Chicago. El año pasado, una de nuestras colegas empeso una campaña de recaudación de fondos para reparar la casa de una mujer mayor de edad que vive en el vecindario de La Villita. Actualmente, su casa esta en condiciones inhabitables y no esta equipada para protegerla contra el frío. Siendo madre soltera de cinco, incluyendo un hijo discapacitado, no tuvo los medios para mantener las reparaciones de su casa, y entre los años se fue acumulando el daño. A pesar de su sufrimiento, ella es una de las personas mas dulces y amables que hemos tenido el gusto de conocer y nos ha inspirado a seguir la campaña de recaudación de fondos en su nombre. Actualmente, necesitamos fondos adicionales para continuar la construcción de su casa. Por favor, considere ayudarnos con una donación. Hello everyone!
My name is Gabriella Morales and I'm a Master's in Social Work student at UIC. Recently at my internship I had the pleasure of meeting an elderly woman,68 years old, that lives in Little Village that was looking for help in restoring her home. From what she told us we couldn’t imagine the amount of repairs needed to be done until we went to her house and saw for ourselves. What we saw was surprising. Sadly, as a single mother the damage to her house has been accumulating over the years and has caused extensive damage to her roof and siding of her home. The kitchen area is also inadequate with an extremely cold cement floor and stationed in a very small room. With the harsh Chicago winter coming we want to be able to help her as soon as possible because we want her to be safe and warm in her home! If you could please donate any amount to this cause or help spread the word we would appreciate it! Thank you and I hope you have a great day.
We also wanted to share with you parts of the conversation we had with her that resonated with us deeply. This is translated from Spanish to English: “God, you know my needs. The walls of my house are falling in, I am old and I can no longer do anything to cover up the holes. I don’t need or ask for luxuries, it’s the cold that comes into my house and I feel like I can no longer live like this. I turn on my heater and all of the heat escapes. I am extremely embarrassed but this cold is too horrible.”

Mi nombre es Gabriella Morales y estoy haciendo mi maestría en trabajo social en la UIC. Recientemente en mi trabajo, conocí a una mujer mayor de edad que vive en La Villita y que está buscando ayuda para “tapar unos huecos” de su casa. No sabíamos la magnitud del problema y decidimos ir a visitarla ese mismo dia. Lo que vimos fue sorprendente. Los techos de adentro y las paredes y el techo de afuera están destruidos. Todo eso se necesita renovar. Invitamos a un trabajador de construcción para que viera la casa y diera una estimado de las reparaciones del techo y las paredes de afuera. También para que le construyan una cocinita digna y adecuada. Ahorita la cocina en un cuartito que no tiene paredes, ni piso. La pared es de ladrillo y el piso de cemento y es muy frio. Con el invierno de Chicago acercándose queremos que esta señora esta segura en su propia casa lo más pronto posible. Agradecemos todo el apoyo que puedan brindarle y lograr que esta señora de 68 años este segura y calientita en su casa. Ayude con su donación y pase la voz con sus familiares, amigos, y conocidos. Le agradecemos mucho! Gracias.
Les compartimos algunas palabras que escuchamos de la señora, con mucha humildad: “Señor por favor tu sabes mi necesidad, las paredes se me van a caer, estoy vieja y no puedo poner palos para tapar los huecos, no puedo ya. Yo no necesito o pido lujos, nomás es el frio que ya viene y siento que no voy a poder aguantar. Prendo el calentón y se sale todo el calorcito. A mí me da mucha vergüenza, pero el frio es horrible. “
