Knapp Family Five-Alarm Fire

Apple Holler will be hosting a meaningful fundraiser to help a long-time employee throughout March. When guests purchase a 5-inch apple pie, 50% of the sale will go to manager Gail Knapp and her family to support the rebuild of what they lost in a devastating barn fire.
“We have horses and barns and I can’t imagine losing everything, let alone in the middle of winter” Apple Holler owner Dave Flannery said. “Gail has worked with us for almost ten years, so we immediately knew we wanted to do something to support her.”
On the early morning of December 5th, the Knapp’s horse barn and two car garage caught fire. The gusty winds produced strong enough flames to make it a five-alarm fire classification, which led to complete destruction of both buildings.
Firefighters rushed to the scene from Raymond, Wind Lake, Union Grove, Yorkville, Kansasville and South Shore. It took five hours for the departments to put the fire out.
The horses stayed safe, as they were not in the barn the evening of the fire. But between the repairs and equipment lost, the Knapp’s lost more than $150,000 and 27 years’ worth of memories. Though there is devastation and heartbreak, Gail and her family are in good spirits due to the support they’ve received.
“We always hear the bad going on in the news, but we have seen so much good throughout this difficult time,” Gail said. “We can’t thank people enough for reassuring us that we’re going to be alright.”
