Help us cover Eva's legal costs so that she can stay in the United States. Eva is part of our restaurant family, rising through the ranks at Brasserie Saison to become head chef at one of the best restaurants in the city. She then had the opportunity to help open the nearby Little Star as sous chef. Driven by her passion for food and her love for her family and her restaurant peers, Eva works 70+ hour weeks. She is her family's sole source of support, support that has been missing during her detention. Little Star is holding Eva's position, but we are hoping to get her back in the kitchen as soon as we can. Please consider a donation to help cover her court fees, legal costs, and to help support her family. Thank you.

EXCITING NEWS! Thanks in no small part to your generosity, Eva has been released on bond! I cannot use enough exclamation points! She will have another hearing on the 14th of March, at which point a judge will make a final determination on whether or not she will be deported. Thanks to the outpouring of community support, the odds are quite good that she will be permitted to stay. We will keep you updated on developments in her case.

Eva is back in the kitchen so if you are local, stop by Little Star! You might even catch sight of Chef Ryan Collins, who helped lead the charge to help Eva. You can read more about the restaurant and Ryan here: https://charlottesville29.com/2018/12/13/introducing-little-star-a-restaurant-from-jose-andres-protege-ryan-collins/ Y'all come eat.

In all of the excitement of Tuesday, I'm not certain that I communicated all of the information that I have, so here is another update.

First, and most importantly, we are in awe of and grateful for the outpouring of support for Eva. I cannot stress this enough. Thank you. Please know that this fundraiser helped convince an immigration judge to set a bond for Eva, rather than simply requiring her to remain in detention until her next hearing on 14 March. The number of folks who have contributed speaks volumes to a judge considering her legal status and will continue to do so going forward.

Second, her bond is set at $6,000. We hope to raise this amount as soon as we can so that she can return to her Charlottesville home. Getting her out of detention is both a humanitarian priority AND a positive step for her next hearing. At that hearing, the judge will decide whether she can remain in the U.S. and under what terms. If we can show that she has continued to amass community support, that's all to the good.

We were not able to see Eva in person at the hearing, but she appeared via videolink and folks have been able to visit her in detention. She is well and in good spirits, and again so grateful to everyone. Let's keep it rolling!

Great news!! Today, the immigration court judge set a $6,000 bond for Eva. Once we can pay the bond, she will be released from ICE custody. She will have another hearing on 14 March to decide what will happen next, be it release on a visa, the start of a green card process, or (and we definitely hope it’s not) deportation. If she is out of detention on the 14th and back to work, it will greatly improve her chances of being allowed to remain in the US. Our ability to post bail and cover her legal costs demonstrates to a judge that she is integrated into our community. We hope to have her out long before the 14th!

We would like to use this fund to raise the bond amount as well as court fees and legal costs. The judge was very impressed by the number of letters written on E’s behalf asking that she be considered for bond. The bond may be as high as $10,000 and, in some courts, even go up to $20,000. The letters helped lower Eva’s bond by showing how strong her social network is here.

To letter writers & donors alike, thank you for being part of Eva’s restaurant and community family. We will keep you posted!

A quick update!
Eva and her support team are so grateful for folks helping out. (Honestly, I'm not a terribly emotional person and I keep tearing up.) We are getting closer by the moment both to our financial goal -and to E's bond hearing tomorrow in DC. Several of us, including some of her Little Star family, are headed up tomorrow and we will be sure to update you as soon as there is news. Thank you, and please keep spreading the world. We are restaurant family, AND we are all one human family.
