Faith In Indiana supports putting families first, families like the Jesus Pena Rodriquez and Erika Fierro family. Here is Erika's story: I was brought to the US at the age of 5 by my parents and therefore am too old to qualify for DACA. I was raised a Hoosier and graduated from Beech Grove high school. I have a degree in cosmetology but am currently a stay at home mom raising my two young children, ages 3 and 8. My husband works construction. We both have no criminal record. We have served as volunteers for the development of music ministry over the past 10 years for four churches in central Indiana: St. Patrick, St. Anthony, St Phillip de Neri and St. Gabriel Catholic church. When I was younger my family tried twice to become citizens but the paperwork "disappeared" after the lawyer was paid.
My husband was recently picked up by ICE for a traffic violation and is currently in a detention center without a trial awaiting forced deportation to Mexico. I was detained by ICE for no reason except walking outside my door, found to be an immigrant , given an ankle bracelet, and have been told by ICE agents in Marion County that I am to be deported as well. My heart is breaking trying to decide what the best decision is for my two young American children. This is a false choice as both decisions (to be separated from your parents or to leave your home and country) are acts of violence against my children.
I am grateful for the generosity of prayer and support of my faith community. I ask for your prayers for insurmountable faith, for justice, for good legal representation, and for strength and courage. I currently need financial gifts to pay for legal fees , living expenses and to plan for future support of my children. Tomorrow, 4/20/2018, I meet with a lawyer for myself (fee will be $150 per hour). I have been given an estimated total cost of approximately $8000 to fight this ICE deportation.
