JWHO Pinkhouse Defender Fund
The Pinkhouse Defenders are a group of volunteer clinic escorts located in Jackson, MS at the state’s last remaining women's clinic, Jackson Women's Health Organization (aka "The Pinkhouse"). As patient escorts, we do our best to make sure women and their companions make it to their appointments as safely and as comfortably as possible. Our lead activist defender, Derenda Hancock, has been helping patients at the Pinkhouse since 2013.
Unfortunately, religious anti-abortion activists ("antis") are outside the clinic "protesting" the legal right to abortion, making patients and their companions feel unsafe in accessing the clinic. The "protesters" range from little old ladies with brochures to men over 6 feet tall bringing bullhorns and ladders to look down on patients and broadcast their religious beliefs into the clinic. As you can imagine, the antis' behavior is quite frightening and intimidating for a woman who has already had to deal with so much just to get to the clinic. For more information about what is happening outside our clinic, check out our Facebook page .
As unpaid volunteers, we occasionally incur expenses in helping women access the clinic safely. We are raising funds to cover legal expenses, as the antis are very well funded, have plenty of lawyers on call, and will come to the clinic to harass patients and escorts alike. We don't have the resources they do.
One of our escorts recently was charged with simple assault by an anti, when the anti was the aggressor. We hope to raise enough funds for legal fees, and any funds not used for legal fees will go to help cover incidental costs of our work, such as water and ice, as well as to help women who come to the clinic and find they are a few dollars short.
By donating to the Pinkhouse Defender fund, you will help women in Mississippi safely exercise their constitutionally protected rights. Please donate to help us to help women in Mississippi, and please, share this fundraiser with your friends.
Please, speak up for choice, speak up for women.
