Tragedy -

Days before graduation, a severe headache, loss of balance, and sudden numbness hospitalized Jonah, and every parent’s worst nightmare ensued when doctors discovered a rare, inoperable, and life-threatening tumour invading his brainstem. Jonah watched by video from his hospital bed as his friends graduated and attended prom without him.32865988_1536662279409266_r.jpeg

Instead of beaming with pride as their bright, athletic, and hardworking son accepted his diploma, Cleon and Charlotte watched with devastation as Jonah endured a brain biopsy and six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. Instead of bringing him to university to start his adult life, they must bring him to the other side of the world to try and save his life.32865988_1536626574984873_r.jpeg

Hope -

Having exhausted the medical treatments available in Canada for this rare and aggressive cancer, Jonah must travel to Europe several times over eight months. There, he will receive chemotherapy via Convection Enhanced Delivery (CED) at the world-renowned Harley Street Clinic in London, England. Between chemotherapy infusions in London, a top clinic in Cologne, Germany, will administer leading-edge immunotherapy.32865988_1536626651653484_r.jpeg

Cost -

This multifaceted attack holds the most promise for a positive outcome, but, since these treatments are not offered in Canada, financial coverage is not available. The anticipated travel and medical costs over eight months are $350,000. These costs include:

- Implanting the CED system
- Chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy
- Supporting medications and supplements
- Diagnostic Scans
- Flights to and from Europe
- Flights within Europe
- Increased living expenses away from home

Dreams -

Jonah is a caring big brother, considerate friend and teammate, and loving son. Countless academic and athletic achievements demonstrate his dedication, determination and work ethic, and he wants a chance to take his seat in the Software Engineering program at the University of Victoria and live out his potential. Unfortunately, hard work and drive won’t be enough for him to overcome this challenge. He cannot do it alone. His family cannot do it on their own.

The holidays are a busy and costly time for everyone, but that did not stop this community. Over the Christmas season, another $40,256 was raised for Jonah’s ongoing treatments, which brings the total to $452,103!!!!

It’s hard to believe how much has happened since June, and it is absolutely mind-boggling to see that over $450,000 has been raised to help this family in that short time. The initial goal has been surpassed by more than $100,000!!!! You people are crazy, and we love you for it.

Since the last update, contributions have come from events held by: Landmark Cinemas Showcase 5, African GroOves, Willow Point Lions Club, Carihi PE Department, and Wet Coast Clothing. Many private donors and Unifor also gave generously.

We hope you had wonderful holidays and found time to be with your family while doing so much for ours. Thank you once again.

Happy New Year!

The community that just keeps on giving. You are amazing! Support for Jonah and funds to ensure he can keep seeking treatment continues. Every day, generous individuals bring donations to Willows Market. They send donations through e-transfer or GoFundMe. They bid on silent auction items. They donate their empties. They buy pins and stickers. They attend fundraisers. They plan fundraisers. They give not only monetarily, but also of their time and their energy.

Since the last update, $40,812 has been deposited in Jonah’s name, and even more fundraisers are in the works! To date, $410,292 has been raised, well beyond our goal of $350,000, which was set to cover the costs of Jonah’s first eight months of treatment abroad.
The reaction is so awe-inspiring that it has been covered in the newspaper and on television, and the news has reached around the world. It isn’t a story about Jonah; it’s a story about you and your unyielding generosity.

Contributions since the last update come from: the Bear Essentials Program, Campbell River Shrine Club, Cinnabar Valley Farms, Carihi Fly Fishing Class, Naesgaard’s Farm and Market, the Community Garage Sale at École Willow Point Elementary, the Merry and Bright Holiday Artisan Market at Sybil Andrews Cottage, Tracey Ordano-Roenicke’s Epicure collections, Deborah Price Photography, and countless and ceaseless personal donations.

While we know that Jonah’s treatment will likely exceed the initial goal of $350,000, we don’t know what it will entail yet. Your drive to keep on giving despite this uncertainty allows us to cherish time together without the financial stress. This is a priceless gift.

Thank you.

Jonah left England today, and we are ecstatic to report that the fundraising goal was blown out of the water before he touched down on Canadian soil. What a fantastic way to welcome him home. The latest tally shows $369,075 raised in Jonah’s name! More arrives every day as fundraisers are completed and the monies forwarded.

Not only has the goal of paying for the first eight months been reached, but there is now a buffer for the unforeseen and the possibility of treatment beyond eight months. As Canadians, it is difficult to comprehend the price of medical care. Between infusions, Jonah had to return to the hospital for extra diagnostic tests, and the unexpected expense was $12,000! Over $140,000 was spent on surgery, medication, and scans during this first trip to England!

Since the last update, the Shankar family’s ever-growing gratitude extends to the following for their efforts in Jonah’s name: Campbell River Golf and Country Club, Storey Creek Golf Club, Campbell River Squash Club, Island Grind, Discovery Coffee, the Flood and Rosse families, Hoyne Brewing, Irish Times, Balloons ‘n’ More Party Shop, Alberni District Secondary School band, and Campbell River Comets Track and Field Club.

Thank you to all for offering a bright light in dark times. At the outset, it was hard to conceive of the future beyond eight months, but now there is hope.

It has only been six days since we last updated the offline donations, and we are incredibly happy to report that since then another $23,538 has been deposited! Can you believe it?!

This money has come from continued personal donations, the amazing Indian dinner put on at the Coast Discovery Inn, the Chameleon Hair Lounge raffle, the Andrew Sheret BBQ... so many wonderful people out there doing wonderful things. Thank you to all.

We're getting really close to reaching the lofty goal we set to pay for eight months of Jonah's treatment. He's back in three weeks. Can we make it before he gets home? Our community has gone above and beyond, so let's reach out around the world by sharing the story and reminding others to do the same, so we can generate some more online donations through the power of social media and the GoFundMe site.

Thank you!
