Poopy Problems

Dogs drop a total of 390 million pounds of poop per year in Colorado alone. That is equivalent to 4,126 dump trucks full of waste. Simply stating, there are approximately 1.4 million dogs in Colorado and each dog generates about 12 ounces of poop per day.
Hi, my name is Lexee Sherman-Sutton and I am a sophomore at Greeley Central High School. In my AP Environmental Science class, I entered the “Caring for Our Watersheds” project among 600 other students and I was selected as one of the top 10. My project is to install dog bag stations around our Greeley Natural Areas to encourage people to pick up after their dogs. This will ultimately help improve our environment, especially our waterways.
Dog waste is a bigger problem than the mess and stink. One pile of waste takes over 9 weeks to decompose and while it decomposes it pollutes our streams, rivers, and local waterways. In two or three days the waste from 100 dogs can close 20 miles of bay-watershed. That whole process does not only cause pollution, but it also carries numerous bacterias, pesticides, and diseases that can easily get transmitted into our soil or into us humans. Those pernicious bacterias and chemicals also get into the air. With so much poop on the ground people obviously do not understand the harmful environmental effects.
I received $1,000 to implement my project. However, that money only covers 12 stations and ideally our community needs more than 60. Therefore I set my goal so that it would cover the rest of the stations. I'm calling all you dog owners, trail strollers, and anyone else who cares about protecting our watershed to help me earn fundings to purchase additional stations. So please be a PAWsitive influence on our Greeley watershed and donate!
