Jesse Jane Journey Bag

My name is Jesse Jane Bush, and I am collecting “Jesse Jane Journey Bags” for kids entering foster care for my Be the Change! Service Project at Andalusia High School. This project is very special to me as I entered foster care when I was 11 years old. The day I was taken to DHR, I was handed a trash bag and told to pack some clothes and leave everything else behind. Fortunately, I was adopted by my amazing parents when I was 14.

I want kids entering foster care to know they are special and that somebody cares! These bags will give them comforting and essential belongings of their own and help ease their transition. I am focusing on bags for teens as they are often neglected and feel unwanted.  I will deliver these bags to various County Departments of Human Resources Offices in Alabama in December of 2018. Thank you for being the change in a child’s life!

My goal is to raise $4000 to create 50 Jesse Jane Journey Bags by December 31, 2018. These bags will be distributed throughout the state of Alabama. You can help by donating $80 for a complete bag or $20 for partial contents of the bag. I will gladly accept any size donations! Even $5 will provide essential toiletries!

A typical journey bag will cost $60-80. All donations are tax deductable

Option 1: Donate a complete Jesse Jane Journey Bag for $60-80 (depending on cost of duffle bag).

Option 2: Provide the duffle bag for $20-30. The bag should be new, of good quality, and non-rolling.

Option 3: Provide all the comfort items, toiletries, and/or activities for $60

Option 4: Provide one category of items for $20.
Comfort items: $20 (Pillow Pet, blanket, fuzzy socks,  night light)
      Toiletries: $20
Activities: $20 (games, books, journal, pens, small photo album)

Option 5: Make a monetary donation of any amount.  Even $10 will provide essential toiletries! 100% of your donation will be used to purchase bags or items.

Option 6: Order these items from my Amazon Jesse Jane Journey Bag wish list.  https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/366XBGDWUVK7R

Please read these shocking facts about the increase  of kids entering foster care.
*According to the Kids Count Data Center, 3772  kids entered foster care in Alabama in 2016. The increase in substance abuse by parents has created a crisis for foster care!  More than one-third of children in the U.S. foster care system are there, at least in part, because of drug abuse by a parent.
*The 2017 report issued annually by the Administration for Children and Families of the Department of Health and Human Services, shows that 437,500 children were in foster care by the end of fiscal year 2016. Government data also shows that drug abuse by a parent was a factor in 34 percent of the cases in 2016. About 92,000 children were removed from their homes due to the substance abuse of at least one parent.
*While in past drug epidemics family and communities could fill some of the gaps, today agencies report that family members across generations may be experiencing substance use problems forcing greater reliance on state custody and non-relative care.
