I’ve faced serious health battles throughout my life, starting with a seizure around age 9. At 49, I suffered a stroke, which was when doctors diagnosed me with Type 2 diabetes. Complications eventually led to the amputation of my right leg, and today I rely on a wheelchair full-time.

Back in 2021, when I was still walking, I was looking for an affordable place to live. During that search, I felt heavily rushed and pressured into buying my small house in Portland, Tennessee, after the real estate agent arrived on speakerphone with an emotional tenant in distress. In the rush, I only did a quick walkthrough and didn’t catch the hidden defects. At the time I could walk, but once I lost my leg, this house became a daily barrier to my safety and dignity.

Living trapped and isolated

Today, the conditions in this house make everyday life an exhausting struggle. Heavy rain turns the yard into a lake, water rushes like a river out front, and floodwaters have come over the porch multiple times. The pipes have burst three times since 2021, and the fixtures are worn down. At barely 700 square feet with uneven floors, my wheelchair constantly scrapes against walls and furniture.

Because I cannot drive, I rely on a local ride service to manage my diabetes and see doctors. That service only shows up about half the time, causing me to miss vital medical appointments. Every week I stay here puts my health and safety at serious risk. Winter and heavy rains are approaching, and I urgently need to get to an accessible environment where I can dependably reach medical care and live with basic safety and dignity.

The goal and how your support helps

My goal is to move closer to Nashville, where the WeGo / MTA Access program provides reliable, door-to-door transit specifically designed for wheelchair users. Having dependable transit will allow me to get to doctors, buy groceries, and manage my health safely.

Your donations will go directly toward securing and purchasing a safe, accessible, single-level home in the Nashville area with level floors, wide doorways, safe ramp access, and no flood hazards. Support will also help with a quality prosthetic leg, fittings, physical therapy, and moving and transition expenses so I can settle safely near accessible transit.

Living on a fixed income, I cannot make this move alone. Even a $5 or $10 donation brings me one step closer to a safe life. If you cannot give, simply sharing this page means the world. Thank you for your support and kindness.
