Jacob Is Moving Again!

As many of you know I have been packing down and dismantling my little homestead as I look for a new place to live.

The reasons behind my need to relocate are entirely something that I can only describe as an internal family decision of what to do with the property that I have been living at, writing about and making videos about my homesteading, off grid and farming endeavors and experiences over the last few years. The decision that I need to relocate has nothing really to do with me and as stated is a family matter and as most folks know families are complicated.

I am thankful for the time that I have had at this beautiful place nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina and am grateful for the family that has graciously allowed me to stay here and do my thing not just with the aforementioned chronicling of my days but also being able to do what I do as a land steward and property caretaker.

The place has definitely undergone some transformations due to my efforts and I myself have found myself transformed by my experiences here so all in all it has been a mutually beneficial scenario but one that is now coming to a close.

I have been actively pursuing various leads on places to move to that can not just provide me and the dogs with some continuity of lifestyle but also a place where I can continue chronicling my experiences and sharing them with others.

So far I have two rather promising leads and they both are oddly enough almost exactly two hundred and thirty miles from where I currently am and also in very opposite directions. One place is very ideal and the other while not quite as ideal would work if it came down to it. So basically one or the other place will work out and ultimately I will be moving two hundred and thirty miles in one direction or the other.

I have looked for closer places but nothing has panned out thus far and at this point I really just want to finish dismantling my homestead, pack everything down and get moved so that I can make good use of the warmer months and be setup and well prepared at a new place for when the cold weather eventually arrives this fall and winter.

Moving an off grid self-sufficient homestead is not like moving into a house or apartment where everything is 'plug and play'. It requires considerable thought, observation of the natural world like where is the angle of the sun throughout the year, how does the surface water move across the land and so much more and ultimately it takes an incredible amount of work to get everything setup and operational so in my view time is of the essence on making a move soon.

Right now I am burning up my days dismantling everything and packing down when I would much rather be planting more black locust trees, setting up larger spring water systems, building an outdoor wood fired water heater and several other projects that I had planned this year. Instead of doing all the stuff I thought I would be doing I am taking things apart that I installed thinking that I was in a long-term situation here and although it is all frustrating I am coping with the changes rather well and overall making good progress.

Anyway I have done the math to rent a large moving truck that can accommodate all my gear in one trip and roughly calculated the fuel costs for both the moving truck and an auxiliary vehicle to give the driver a ride back after the truck gets unloaded and returned to the local rental business. I have a driver lined up for both vehicles which makes at least that part covered and I have been working some for a neighbor making a little money but I don't think that they have enough work for me to reach my goal as I sort out which of the places that I will actually be moving to. So I have decided after much internal debate to setup this fundraiser and appeal to folks to contribute if they can.
