Medical Outreach Effort in Uganda

Donation protected
Hi! Our names are Callan, Dong and Shiv and we are 4th year medical students embarking on an elective in Africa with the International Society for Student Unity and Empowerment (ISSUE) Foundation from the University of Tasmania.

During the year, ISSUE was able to fundraise $2000 and now we’re asking for your help.

Last year, ISSUE purchased a large block of land for a group known as ‘Anaweza Skills and Talents’ in order for them to have adequate space to maintain livestock and grow fresh fruit and vegetables. This was done with the hope of facilitating the development of a self-sustainable community as the block of land also doubled as a source of income for the people involved in cultivating the produce. Furthermore, as the Anaweza group also have a dance troupe and band, some of the money raised was used to buy new costumes and instruments for them in the hope of providing the group with the means to become involved in paid performances.

In addition to our time with the Anaweza group, we also hope to spend some time educating the community on health promotion and disease prevention. As HIV/AIDS is commonly seen in the African population a proportion of the money we raise will go towards conducting sessions discussing safe sexual practices and the importance of undergoing HIV testing. We also hope to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets and conduct an information session for the community to explain the importance of the nets, in the prevention of malaria, how to use them and how to look after them appropriately. These nets will be purchased from a local supplier in Masaka so that we are also able to support the economy.

Finally, we would also love to promote the development of the local medical clinic by supplying them with more equipment, if possible. Previously, ISSUE have been able to provide the clinic with a dental chair, microscope and a power generator.

Please note, we are all volunteers and all money raised goes towards our outreach efforts in Uganda, and not the costs associated with our travel.
